One of the greats. To average 57 in test cricket, in an era when batting averages were a lot lower is amazing, allied to being a spinner and seam bowler, and great fielder.
I never saw him play myself, but I did get a video in the late 80s called playing cricket the west indies way. He was the main contributor, and I learned a lot from that( as a mere club cricketer.) | | | |

Was in Barbados when he turned 80 and there was a celebratory T20 match in his honour between a current Windies side and a Gary Sobers XI. Plenty of speeches beforehand paying gratitude to the great man. In between the showers (was in the party stand so it didn’t matter if we got wet as we were all very merry to say the least), watched a great game of cricket which eventually finished with torrential rain at 12.30 in the morning. Great memories and the only time I saw him in the flesh. Too young to remember him playing but watching clips of him playing I suspect that he would be the same dominant player in all formats today.

Mate of mine was at Lord's last night for a charity dinner with a "fireside" Q&A session led by Clive Myrie. Guests included Gordon Greenidge, Clive LLoyd, Viv Richards, Brian Lara, Gladstone Small and Ian Botham. Would have had such memories and tributes had -the dinner been tonight then again it may have been cancelled. |  | | |
