Our city has been neglected over the years and it definitely lacks that wow factor but we donât make the most of what we have. Theyâve been talking about building a monument of the spitfire for years which we should all be proud of. It always amazes me how many people who come from Southampton do not even realise that the supermarine spitfire was first built in Woolston and the Germans saw it as something which had to be stopped resulting in them bombing the factory and production was then moved to different parts of the city.. Production also started at Castle Bromwich but that was later on .The spitfire plane was one of the major reasons why we won the Second World War yet people never talk about it down here . Imagine if it was first built in a northern city or even Portsmouth youâd never hear the end of it. We should all be proud of it.

I went to Belfast last week, fantastic city. I went for a walk around the Titanic museum there and read all about how they reclaimed and developed the area around it. As you say, all parties have done nothing in terms of development. I parked in Mayflower Park a few mornings ago and itâs an absolute disgrace, nothing there, a few portaloos that have doors hanging off their hinges. Itâs a disgrace. It's funny you should say that because most visitors wouldn't even notice that Southampton is a port city. It's a city that's turned its back on the sea. The Above Bar area is all most people see of the city and that could just as well be in the middle of the country. There are even local people who've probably never even seen the cruise terminal in their lives unless they've had cause to use it.
In contrast, Portsmouth has highlighted its port area with the Gunwharf Quays development, the Spinnaker, the Historic Naval Dockyard, HMS Victory and Warrior. [Post edited 11 Aug 9:19]

When I first arrived here in 2000, the council, like many across the country, had just received a load of government funding to redevelop areas. Southampton spent a fortune on the top end of St Maryâs Street in the cut through towards SMS and the white elephant that is the conference centre in Thornhill. Scandalous waste of money. | | | |

I think Southampton has such a history to tell and could really be made into something and having the twin waterways and the solent is a big advantage but as many of you have said, they have not had vision, they have lacked any desire to do something and as much as they can use WWII as an excuse, well look at Germany (albeit they had Marshall Aid and we didn't), and especially at Warsaw and what they accomplished as an example (and that was under Soviet Union domination). Where they have built flats around it, theyâve also built amenities, bars, restaurants, cinema, shops, gym, bowling alley etc. Whereas we have Ocean Village and a couple of bars, the cinema has now gone and there is pressure on Harbour Lights to ship out and be replaced by more flats. | | | |

The Titanic Museum in Belfast cost ÂŁ75m, half of which was Govt funded
Sea City in Soton cost less than half of that so this probably explains the disparity.
