I live in the USA and am touched that so many in the UK and other parts of the world have this level of respect and fondness for Dolly Parton, one of country music's true cultural icons. As divided as Americans can be about a lot of issues, pretty much everyone here was a fan of Dolly in one way or another.

I was listening to Radio 3 in the car and they had a tribute on there - normally classical only, so that's quite a thing.
Quite a lot of tributes on R3 in fact - Tom Mckinney on the breakfast show, Georgia Mann on Essential Classics and Katie Derham* on In Tune all paid tribute to her and played different tracks. Dolly transcended genre and appealed to almost everyone.
I'm not a lover of glitz, so never really took Dolly very seriously until the last few years. I had been getting more interested in country rock and alt country and loved Johnny Cash's later stuff. Then I heard her original version of I Will Always Love You, which I didn't like by WH, and Coat of Many Colours. I then realised how talented she was. The rock covers album she did a couple of years ago was very good too.
A lovely person too, who didn't take her image too seriously.
That’s pretty much where I stand too. Always been aware of her (who couldn’t be?) but the sheer quantity of brilliant music from countless other artists and genres precluded me from exploring her ouevre more deeply (it always feels to me that the more you discover the less you know).
It’s often the way, isn’t it, that it takes the passing of an artist to focus your attention on their work (and remarkable life in Dolly’s case). As a starting point I always find these ‘Top 20’ type selections (though necessarily subjective) helpful …
As for Dolly’s universal appeal and connection to ordinary people, I’ve always thought she would have made a wonderful landlady of Coronation Street’s Rovers Return Inn!
