| Being told to stockpile on 16:34 - Oct 27 with 635 views | slmrstid | There's an element of balance of risk to a lot of this. Yesterday I read there were still 90,000 properties (or people...can't remember which now...) without power in the more rural north areas after the storm at the weekend. For those people being a bit stocked on things like water and bit of canned food etc will be helpful. In adverse weather is London (or the Midlands in my case) likely to be without power for days on end? Not likely I'd say, and if it is then it means other areas of the country are in much worse positions. Still, I have an 18 month old at home so I have got us stocked up on bottled water to keep in the garage at least. If we did have adverse weather etc that saw us without for a few days me & wife could manage, but not so easy for a toddler to deal with so she'd be fine at least. | | | |

| Being told to stockpile on 16:11 - Oct 27 by numptydumpty | There was a guy rang in to Five Live to say he has totally prepared and stockpiled all he needs for a reasonable life for a period when staple items will be sparse. He has between 70 and 80 jars of gherkins. Gherkins Stockpiled. Check... Clearly a very sensible man... Good God a life without gherkins, doesnt bear thinking about !! |
He’ll be kicking himself for not waiting til after the Budget.

Governments are all in for £50 billion unfunded tax cuts to the rich when inflation is in double figures and both debt and the deficit is projected to continue to rise. This greedy Capitalist bung was only foiled by other greedy capitalists looking to make a quick buck at our expense. It's not comparable to today, with debt projected to fall by 2029 leaving us as the least indebted of the G7 and with current interest rates at 3.75 not 10. |
You are confusing UK interest rates with Bond market rates. UK rates are at 3.75% Bank of England while Bond markets (the interest lenders charge the UK government to borrow) is at over 5% and rising. For context the Bond rate was 1.25% 10 years ago. That indicates that the markets are very nervous about the UKs ability to pay its debt. Debt is also OK, if you are spending it on infrastructure that helps drive GDP and makes everyone better off. The problem is the debt being accrued is on welfare and entitlements which creates nothing. With regards to debt falling, that is before you factor in the announcement Burham made that we will all get free care in our old age. Not that it will happen as they can't afford it despite cancelling the triple lock on pensions. It's going to come crashing down. One thing could trigger it short term - Trump refuses to accept the Midterm results which triggers a financial crises in the US leading to the AI stock bubble burst and contagion across the globe. The elections are next week. I've got my 8 tins of Baked Beans though.

No, I'm not. I meant inflation, not interest rates. [Post edited 27 Oct 21:42]
