I doubt that Wigan has produced many decent bands etc. However, it is very famous for its Northern Soul, but i haven't a clue what Northern Soul actually is, so if anybody knows, can they put up some 'stuff'?

I've been to a Northern Soul Club by Great Portland Street Station. They are very snooty if you are in a Maiden shirt lots of people dress up. I liked the music. Though I couldn't tell you any of the artist's.

It was basically Soul music not from Motown in the 60s 70s & 80s.The cathedral of this movement was Wigans Casino a nightclub that didn't sell alcohol and involved allnighters of dancing and outlandish outfits.Some famous examples were Shake Ya Tailfeather James & Bobby Purify The Bottle Gil Scott Heron One Way Ticket Tyrone Davis Secret Love Kathy Kirby The Snake Al Wilson Love On A Mountain Top Robert Knight Skiing In The Snow Invitations Tainted Love Gloria Jones .Musically the nearest that Wigan have to producing a well known band the The Verve from nearby Upholland

I work on quite a lot of Motown, Northern Soul (Trojan & Ska too) stuff so have quite a good collection.

It could have been from Motown, just not so well know tracks or 'mainstream'. if you want a taster try Russ Winstanley on BBC iplayer, does a show every Saturday on BBC radio Lancashire.
