Advice - Pet insurance 15:08 - Aug 22 with 7734 viewsBucks_Ranger

Hey all - completley off topic but need some advice/help..

My wife just bought a little lap dog 3 weeks ago, hes not insured (purely as we never got round to it) our cats are insured so its not something we avoided deliberatley..

Anyhow, hes broken his leg, the bill is just under 3grand - which were paying, (albeit on the credit card, soon to be shifted to a 0% balance transfer)

However my question is, we now cannot find anyone to insure him due to a 'Pre-existing' condition, meaning anything that may happen in the future is covered, apart from anything that may happen to the leg he broke!?

I'm not a scammer or in anyway dishonest, I just want to be able to set something in place for any future 'mishaps'

Any advice ideas wiould be greatly appreciated
Ps:any jokers that may say for £3 grand I would have put him down, then dont, hes my wifes pride & joy - sensible answers only please...

Change vets, change his name and claim you bought him from another owner and have no idea as to what his previous conditions were.

Poll: Are we staying up?

I think you can get covered if he has pre-existing but you may have to pay more for the policy or if no increase in cost is wanted, they'll exclude any re-occurance of the same injury as you've said.

I've had my two cats insured with Tesco's and they had to pay out once (about £600) and they were fine. Just sent the vets bill with the appropriate forms and they paid the vet direct.

I think it's a case of shopping around and seeing which companies will do what. You may have to get him insured though but excluding his broken leg.

Edit: Or do what Gloucs_R said!!

Had a little Patterdale and after shopping around found more than offered the best pet insurance.

3 grand for a broken leg!! I think I need to retrain to become a vet.

Apologies for being so tasteless Bucks.

On a more serious note - I think you will struggle to find anyone that will cover you on the leg that has been broken. I think it's standard industry practice on pet insurance that they don't cover per-existing injuries.

As Glous suggested, change vet and when you insure claim he's from rescue and as far as you know he has no medical problems.

Pet plan generally have the best cover but you'll pay a bit more. Our rabble are with direct line at the moment. Half the price of our Petplan quote but we've not made a claim so I can't really recommend.

One tip to bring the price down if it is a pedigree is to say it's a cross. It's impossible to tell the difference even for a vet. Pedigrees are generally less healthy, more prone to cancer/illness/allergies etc and shorter lived so insurance companies charge more to cover them.

Sounds like good advice.

Incidentally, are vets the new Wonga.com ?

Our little dog got run over about 2 years ago.We were given the choice of putting him down, amputating his shattered front paw or mending the fractures at £1700.Guess which choice we made?£1700 well spent as he is now running around like a puppy.
We let the insurance run out because the premium shot up after the first year.

My two cats and dog are insured with these people;

http://www.animalfriends.org.uk/

Don't know how prices compare but they have a very flexible payment schedule in that you can choose various degrees of cover. They also make contributions to animal charities (or they are themselves a charity - not sure which) which I'm pretty sure the other insurers don't do.

Hilarious.

Technology advances, unfortunately humans do not.

In the insurance world someone, somewhere will offer a policy
It's just whether you can afford the premiums

I'd be careful pulling strokes but if your vet is of a "friendly" nature then you'd be fine

What's made me think is the angle on pedigree.
My lab is a very rangey lab and not your typical lab but we insure her as a pedigree. She'd DEFINETELY pass as a cross breed (fcukin furious sometimes!!!) so I think I may explore this next renewal

As for the £3k, I'd stick a zero on that to help my mutt. Means more to me than anything

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Pet Plan, we insured our dog after he ate my leather belt, they insured him but we are not covered for 'foreign objects' for the next 12 months.

Makes a season ticket seem cheap

When I was a kid we used to have them put down and then we'd get a new one. Times have changed, I guess.

Can I still purchase pet insurance if my pet has been previously ill?

If your pet has previously been ill or injured you can still purchase pet insurance. Before you take out a pet insurance policy you must inform us of any conditions, injuries and prior illnesses they´ve had and like all other insurance providers Petplan unfortunately will not be able to cover you for these. These exclusions will be clearly stated on your certificate of insurance and will not affect the price of your premium.

Surely, basis the above, they are duty bound to offer you pet insurance, even if it is at an unfavourable rate.

Thanks mate,

Yes they will insure the dog, however the injured leg can never been insured under the policy, which is what I'm after as there's every chance if it did not heal properly then it could break again, god forbid!

Ah now I understand sorry. Yeah I guess that is going to be very difficult to find insurance for, I'd say the best you can hope for is pre arranging some kind of deal with the vets doing the surgery on the leg or at least finding out what they can offer should there be problems with the work they've done. Even then I guess there isnt going to be much the vet can offer.

I take my cats (two Maine Coons) to a at specialist and pay a members fee which give money off stuff that isnt covered by insurance and pet plan to cover the rest, maybe there are similar things for dogs??
