Land Registry would be first port of call, there's a small fee (3-5 quid I think) and you can go online, type in postcode and from there should (in theory) be able to find out ownership - provided of course it's been registered -
Lots still arent, normally from mortgages paid off many years ago then never re mortgaged in about the last 20 year or so, since moving slowly from the old "Deeds system" where really you had no proof if you lost the "deeds" that you owned a place.

It’s basically a brick built semi derelict shed / barn thing around 10m sq but it’s set in huge field with ancient fencing around it.
Would be useful for a project I got planned and I just wanted to see how much the owner would want from it. I’ve spoke to the neighbours who all say they haven’t a clue who owns it. | | | |

Using a plan you can carry out a search of the index map at the land registry- this will tell you the title number and you can get the office copy entries showing you the ownership unless it is unregistered in which case it gets harder |  | | |
