As great as they were, Townsend, Routledge and Walker were all loans (and the latter two did just half a season each as one replaced the other). They were never ‘our’ players so their future with us was always out of hands. Routledge came close to being signed permanently but Briatore scuppered that.

For me I think the three in the last 10 years would be

Taarabt
Remy
Eze

Austin
Taarabt
Eze

Austin and Taarabt had given up before they left which was disappointing.

As Juzzie mentioned Townsend, Routledge were loans but gutted when they left. How did we never sign Routledge???

Oh and Kennedy if we go back a little further!

We did actually own Routledge at one stage, then sold him to Newcastle before loaning him back

Seriously, in the last 10 years. I'd have to say Adel, Akos and Eze.

He specified quite clearly "last 10 years".

On that basis, I'd go for Ale Faurlin, Clint Hill and Jamie Mackie.

And the reason for all 3 is they were very emotional departures when they were heading around the pitch following their last games waving farewell. Was hard not to have a lump in your throat waving farewell to them.

Was gutted about others, such as Austin and Eze, but we didn't quite have the same farewell for them for one reason or another (and Eze's not being able to have that was a huge shame).

Clive Allen (second time)
Les Ferdinand (inevitable but gutting all the same)
Clive Wilson (sheer class)

I'm tempted to include Eze but he deserved his move and we all hope he goes on to achieve great things.

Routledge should have been a Hoop for much longer than he was and I never liked seeing him play for other teams. However, he wasn't in the same class as the players above.

Suffering since 1978.

It was very sad how injuries, form, and manager preference just meant that this lot just limped out of the club without big money or fanfare.

Akos
Faurlin
Tarrabt

Beautiful players all of them.

We have debated Taarabt many times over the years. My personal view is that he realised his potential for one wonderful season, but wasted his talent after that. I wasn't sorry to see him leave when he did.

Austin and Remy were very talented forwards, who could have formed a very decent partnership on our return to the Premiership. Unfortunately it wasn't to be.

I don't think we got the best out of Vargas, who I thought was a very decent player. A better coach with an open mind would have got more from him. I was sorry to see him go too.
