I guess it would have been worse if he wasn’t there.
When I used to ref , 80’s, 90’s and early 2000,s when the losing team went off on one at the end I would say to them “I’ll tell you what, next time I’m due to referee you I’ll confirm the game then not turn up without any notice, then let me know how you got on”. 9/10 the penny dropped.

That they would be better off without you?? Just joking 🙃
Fair play to anyone brave enough to ref. I did my six games to qualify and got selected for a county cup final line but my anxiety kicked in and I rejected it because I had never ran a line in an official capacity. The rejection wasn’t well received by the county FA and I decided to walk away completely because I found it very difficult.
Will revisit reffing at youth level now I’ve stopped playing and coaching.
Mariner had a bit of a mad five minutes in the Leeds Arsenal game where Xhaka should have been booked twice in a minute and got nothing, and then Glehardt did exactly the same thing and did get booked immediately afterwards. Other than that he was fine.
Kavanagh in the Boro v Bournemouth game seemed to have missed the memo about meaningful contact - absolutely everything was a free kick, and every free kick was a yellow card. Very bizarre performance.

Agree about Mariner
Didn't see 2nd match, but from what you describe, sounds the exact opposite to how we've seen games refereed since the Euros.
BTW for all - think referees need to aim to be a bit better than no ref at all!

Good for you if you do give it another go.
Trick is to find level/games/leagues that work for you.
No point doing it if you don't enjoy it - plus you won't be very good either if that's the case!
Even at entry level, or certainly after some games, its possible to get on decent games on the line, don't dismiss that as an option out of hand - better games, better facilities and its good to work as a 3 rather than on your own.
However as I say, just do whatever works for you, would be my advice.
Spuds v pool. Kane, sliding completely out of control, studs up, takes bloke on the shin. Yellow no VAR Robertson, goes in hard admittedly, kicks floor which makes his foot mis direct onto leg instead of ball. VAR then red.

Joke.
I think they're both red. But you can't reach different conclusions for them. It's either they're both red or neither are red. If the referee got one look at both and got it wrong I'd forgive, but to have video review and come to those decisions is so, so poor.
Would love to know how they've come to the conclusion that Kane's tackle isn't a red card and Robertson's is.
With that ridiculous Newcastle penalty decision, and Xhaka last night, it's been a very poor weekend for the refereeing/VAR combo.
I think you'll find he(Kane) gets special dispensation for being "England's inspirational captain" Bryan Robson regularly kicked lumps out players in his day and stayed on the field as well. How it wasn't a sending off is beyond me. Studs up leg breaker!!

I used to think that about Shearer, who was every bit the nasty, aggressive, elbows out striker that Duncan Ferguson was (as you need to be, fair enough) but was constantly allowed away with it while others got away with it.
Very happy to see Justin Whittle stick one back on him at Grimsby one night and Mark Halsey ignore it.
A point we've raised before about referees who are in poor form (and referees definitely do go through form the same as players do) not being relegated, taken out of games, 'punished', possibly because there's nobody else, raised here. Chris Kavanagh, the referee who was dreadful at Middlesbrough yesterday, is the VAR official for Spurs today where he has, again, been awful.
Repeating same action and expecting different result...

That's my memory of him too. I think I only saw him play once astgainst us (could be wrong) but we lost 1-0 at home so I think it was 1995. Very syndical player and all elbows. Good though...

Am I the only person who thinks the Newcastle / Man City incident was definitely NOT a pen?
(Well me and the officials)
I’m interested to know why you think that. Because if it’s not, it basically means once the ball has been cleared or dribbled away by a defender, the goalkeeper is then allowed to clean out any opponent left in the penalty area because “the ball’s gone”. Great fun for the goalkeepers no doubt, but nonsense in practice. An obvious penalty.

Defender wins ball cleanly, there is then incidental contact between keeper and attacker, because of both’s momentum.
Goalkeepers should be allowed to go for the ball in ways that other players can’t in their area.
