It quite often happens like that and most great Innings begin with a let off of some kind. It happened to me in a match this summer actually (stop it). I arrived a bit late after a long drive and had to get quickly changed and padded up and then head straight out to the crease, as I was opening the batting. I normally face first ball and looked up to see some built south asian chap hurtling towards me. Now often (at my level) this sort of player has more bark than bite but not on this occasion and in the first over the ball came whistling down the wicket at various heights and lengths. I dealt with all ok except one ball which looped up off my bat back down the wicket. The bowler gleefully went after it but made a complete hash of a fairly simple catch, with the ball bouncing off his chest to safety. After this reprieve there was no looking back and I went on to reach a nice total of 49, smashing ten 4’s in the process before edging behind to the wicket keeper [Post edited 8 Nov 2023 10:44]
