Today, the manager made 8 - EIGHT- changes to the odds and ends he put out against WBA to 'freshen things up' (and then some)! Perhaps, I dunno, he thought it was the FA Cup game this week. Result? We go from an incoherent, ineffectual rabble to, somehow, an even more jaded and (less surprisingly) even more disjointed, incoherent, ineffectual rabble. That 2nd half performance, let's be honest, was basically scary at every level.
Where is Julien taking us against Wednesday?
He changes it and changes it again, to manage our 'energies' - and we still look off it! We're not Manchester City! Find a team that can keep the ball, compete, and create, playing to a system where round pegs are in round holes, stick to it, and demand your standards from there. It's not le science du rocket, Julien!
We've had one bells and whistles showing in the last 5 games against a Leicester team who clearly weren't at it against our lot who, equally clearly, and with hindsight more and more obscenely, raised its game against Marti. The other 4 (Boro, Portsmouth, WBA, and now today's shocker) we've basically been different shades of sh*ite. We've also not competed properly for more than one half in any of them. Unprofessional doesn't begin to cover it.
If JS doesn't know it's nowhere near good enough, he's a smiling idiot. If I'm the board, I'm watching the Wednesday game like a hawk.

We have been saying this season that our bench looks so much better than last season so we should be able to chop and change, but apparently not. The problem seems to be that we have noone to replace Madsen and Burrell and they are both clearly knackered.

How many times have we actually played well this season? A handful? Still not convinced by Stephan. Today was absolute dross with barely any pattern of play other than boot it up onto their central defender's head. It's a shame as a play-off spot is there for the taking. No but I think most people look at the selection and he's dropped Varane for Hayden, Saito for Smyth and he then has Dunne, Hayden and Smyth on the pitch who are all experienced at this level and who should be able to have some influence over the way the team plays and responds. That really didn't happen today. We saw what the players could do against Leicester when they do what's being asked of them, and then what they can't do when they slack off and don't follow instructions.
I know you don't like JS but the team he sent out today should have been capable of a lot more than they didn't achieve. That could partly be JS's fault for not drilling in some things they should have done but these players aren't wind up toys that the manager shuffles onto a pitch to only do his bidding. They should be able to have the energy and the experience to make things happen themselves. Ray Wilkins once told me that a lot of the time when you went out onto the pitch it was about strength of character and making decisions as the group of players on the pitch that won matches, not just what the gaffer said and a whiteboard. He put a lot more on the players on the pitch to sort it out as well.
Perhaps that is a dying art but we seem to lack the collective thinking on the pitch to take control sometimes. The manager is there to pick the best version of a team to get a job done but the players have responsibility to not only take on board what they are asked to do but also collectively sort themselves out if it isn't going to plan. So today JS picks his most experienced players, okay without Sam Field, and it still doesn't happen. It's not always ALL the managers fault, is all I am saying. |  |

I agree that the starting line-up itself was okay. Didn't see much in-game management though. Wingers swapped. I suppose Morgan in midfield was an attempt to get on the front foot which didn't work. Kolli won some headers but wasn't on very long. It just seemed very one dimensional. Maybe he could have gone with three in the middle to try and win the midfield - they seemed first to most second balls, particularly in the second half. If you lose the midfield, you won't win many games. No point having two wingers and two strikers if you barely create a chance. | | | |
