Who would win. 17:37 - Jul 7 with 1703 views | qpr_1968 | The 1996 england semi final team......southgate playing. or Southgates team the other night against ukraine and i know they're different times, but i'd still go for the 1996 team....even though this team is one of the best for a long time. i think what southgate has done at the moment is short of a miracle.

2021 team.....by a country mile!!! Only 3/4 would get into the current side!!!! Our subs that Southgate doesn't pick would get into the 1996 side!!! [Post edited 7 Jul 2021 18:07]

Who would win. on 19:44 - Jul 7 with 1511 views | Malintabuk | Think Kane and Shearer would be decent together. Kane doing the 10 role Would definitely take the 96 keeper..... perhaps Gazza.... but this 21 team is going to be a bit special
Who would win. on 19:48 - Jul 7 with 1503 views | Toast_R | Think football has changed a lot from those days. That team were nowhere the athletes we see today. Half of them were on the piss I reckon. This England team would win comfortably imo. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Depends on how it was refereed if it was under 96 rules think Sterling and Saka might be a bit shocked as Adams and Pearce launched them into the front row of the stand

That's the point I always make. With modern science, fitness and training we - QPR - would easily beat Brazil 1970, England 1966, Hungary 1953 and any great side pre 1980. If Peter Crouch discovered Doctor Who's Tardis and went back in time to almost any era in history - taking with him the scientific breakthroughs of the 21st century - he would automatically be considered the greatest player ever. So you need to take into account a lot more. The 2021 team has no one who could square up to anyone circa 1996 and feel confident enough that if things got heated that they would come out on top. The 96 team has 6 or 7: who would you really want as a defensive midfielder, Declan Rice or Paul Ince? Each to their own but I'd rather have Incey. As you say, the 96 defence would eat Sterling, Saka and players like Sancho for breakfast. The defence of 2021 would also be made a mockery of by Sheringham and Shearer. Whose better than Gazza in 2021? How can anyone suggest that Pickford is better than Seaman. Jack Grealish? He would be a cripple by the end of 1 season in the mid 90. Playing in 96 this current team is a bread and butter team for their predecessors and it would be literally be boys against men. They benefit hugely from better understanding of fitness but you'll never convince me that they are a better XI overall.

I didn't realise that we didn't use any subs and that both teams had two keepers on the bench. I think the 2021 squad is far stronger than the 1996 one. The teams are fairly well split though, maybe five of the 1996 team would get in, Seaman, Adams, Gascoigne, Ince, Shearer.

Although Shaw has played really well (much to my surprise!) I’d have Pearce in every time.

The only thing is what people seem to have forgotten is Pearce played at centre back in that tournament with Anderton and McManaman as wing backs

I had forgotten that, thanks denham. I'm also shoehorning McManaman and Sterling into the same team slightly, plus Redknapp was not always first-choice in '96 if I recall correctly. It's just an effort to pick the 'best' eleven.
