It’s currently with the publishers. The highlight is the time I talk about going up to Ayresome for a League cup game in ’84. We only took a small firm up there — me, Wandsworth Dave, Tooting Dave, Keith the Sheath and Robbie Mac - we had to fight our way back to the station with hand-to-hand combat all the way. Fighting on the train on the way back to Darlo, fighting on the platform whilst we waited six hours for the first London train in the morning. Kept at it all the way down to King’s Cross, on the tube, on the walk home from the tube, in the paper shop and finally in my Mum’s front room before my Dad came in, did his nut at the state of the place and Boro jumped through the Bay window to get away from him. Fair play, they never run us, but they were game as fu ck. Kids today wouldn’t believe how dangerous leaving your house was in the 80’s, but fair play cos no-one ever inconvenienced anyone who wasn’t a like-minded, up for it chap with a passion for football violence. In many ways, I miss those days, but then I went raving, done a load of pills and shacked-up with the top geezer from the Brentford Busy Bees. We’ve now got four cats and a shop in Chiswick selling Designer Homeware…but I do miss the adrenaline rush.

If you ever see former hooligans interviewed or read their books, you’d know that they go to great lengths to explain how it was only ever like-minded souls who got caught up in bother at the football. And I think that’s blatantly true: Football violence has never caused kick-offs to be brought forward, games to be declared all-ticket with only members allowed to buy tickets, city centre pubs to be shut for the day, trains to be declared dry or trains to be held waiting for the police to arrive. It’s never led to a massive waste of police resources as groups of idiots are shepherded around the transport network, kept apart at service stations, and in town and city centres. No-one who wasn’t up for it has ever had to shelter when windows have been put through in pubs, on trains, coaches and mini-buses. No pub owner has ever had to clean up after their pub has been attacked. No-one who wasn’t up for it has ever been hit by a flying coin or seat. Chaps going at it at the football wasn’t responsible for declining gates in the 70’s and 80’s, weren’t responsible for people having to watch football in pens, and in no way led to the Heysel or Hillsborough disaster or a European ban for English clubs denying supporters the chance to see their teams in Europe. No-one who wasn’t a fully up for it chap has ever had to run for cover when it’s all gone off at a train station or in a city centre. No-one who wasn’t into fv has ever been started-on when minding their own business on the way to/from a ground. Or missed out on a ticket because the away allocation’s been cut for a high risk fixture. No parents have ever left their kids at home on derby day because they didn’t want them seeing or getting caught up in fighting. It’s always just been groups of like-minded chaps operating in a vacuum.

Nicely put. Your post was so on the nose, and so familiar from many conversations on WATRB that involved very similar exchanges, but with people who actually 'thought' that way, I was caught out:)

Thankfully I managed to avoid most of it during the 80's but still got caught up from time to time.
One of them wasn't even QPR involved but me & a mate was on a train with Stoke fans coming back from Millwall. As we pulled into London Bridge it kicked off on the platform. I managed to get around it by working my way through the train but my mate who got off first ended up slipping off the platform and half under the train and managed to scramble out sharpish.

I saw my mates girlfriend who was picking me up in the car park so I made my way out of the crowd, up the stairs and towards the car park. "Where do you think you're going?" a big copper asked me. I resisted the urge to reply "It's a free country and I can go where I like" so I opted to simply explain I was being picked up. Quite reasonable you'd think. "No you're not" and he literally pushed me down the stairs". Fk all you could do about it in them there days. So, I just went into the station and out the back.
But yes, anyone who reckons it's only between like-minded people and no one else gets affected by it is a thick cnt.
