Trying to lighten the mood somewhat.... positives today...

Shodipo scared the hell out of their left back - looked great running forward.
Scowen is an absolute asset, has poor games sometimes but never hides.
Manning had another good game today.
Eze had a decent first half - needs some support and an arm around his shoulders.
wells and hemed will not wear the hoops at loftus road again.

anymore, anyone?

The season of distinctly phased very bad/very good/very bad is almost over, and we're still in the Championship.

Are you not going to give us some of your stats about how brilliant Mclaren is to Holloway ?

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

Are you not going to repeat what you said last year about McClaren deserving another season?

I went to the game with a neutral supporting friend, who felt that we held our own and played well - thought we should have got the points and was surprised that we had rested 3 or 4 "senior" members.

I'll only focus on players which may be here next year.

Lumley - great save for that "off-side" one-on-one. I do like him and think he will grow in confidence next year as long as the fans don’t turn on him.

Furlong - Was brilliant in the air at a couple of corners in the first half. OK at RB (I was sat in EL block and was interested to see how much coaching and help from Eustace he was getting - positioning etc - another positive), but I really want him to partner Leistner or Cameron at CB next year. He is a CB and not a RB. Surprisingly good in the air for a not particularly tall man.

Manning - I love this man. I thought he took some unfair criticism for Blackburn (I would blame those around him). I genuinely think he will be a real success at LB.

Leistner — Made life so much easier for Manning and the combination with Cameron added the “mature heads” to the team.

Scowen - Seems like a new man. Great work-rate.

Bright Osayi Samuel — Not much more that needs saying about how this guy should have played most of the season. Great pace, one thing on his mind which is to get into the penalty area and cause havoc. Just needs the end product. Reminds me of Andy Impey.

Shodipo — Loved how he turned the left back inside out about 5 or 6 times in a row. Definite skill and appears similar to BOS.

Eze — Confidence seems to be coming back. He had an ability to beat two players with one touch or drop of the shoulder. Great skill — let’s build him up next year.

Walker — Glad he got a chance. Would like to see more.

Ilias Chair — Can’t wait to see him back next year (or pre-season).

I don’t think we’ll see any more of Wells, Hemed, Smith, Ingram, Bidwell, Lynch, Cousins, Baptiste, Kakay, Wszolek, Freeman and Luongo, and I’d like to see us retain Cameron and Rangel if the price is right, so assuming two players for each position:

GK: Lumley / Dieng
RB: Rangel / ?
CB: Furlong / Hall
CB: Leistner / ?
LB: Manning / Hamalainen
RM: Shodipo / ?
CM: Scowen / ?
CM: Cameron / ?
LM: Bright Osayi Samuel / Chair
CF: Eze / Smyth
CF: ? / ?

Then there’s some fringe players left (Walker, Oteh, Wheeler, Owens, Goss, Phillips).

Assuming 11 players leaving, I’d like to see 6 old heads in allowing for Freeman / Luongo / Wszolek transfer fees to help towards the FFP books and a reduction in 5 expensive players (Ingram, Wells, Hemed, Wszolek, Luongo) allowing for a carefully picked number 9 to help to bring Eze, Smyth and Oteh on.

There is a way to muddle through this mess, I'm sure of it.

Great post Hastings Hoop. I completely agree.

Freeman will go, but I hope Luongo stays.

My worry is the both Smyth and Chair are tiny and I’m not sure that they will hold their own in the Championship which is very physical.

I have some hope for Oteh as he appears to be big strong and quick. I just don’t know if he will make the grade at this level. It is a shame he hasn’t had many minutes out on loan.

Was it just me - or were we slightly better yesterday without Freeman who tends to always hold onto the ball too long?

Thought we played with energy and at least tried - disagree about Cameron - holding midfielder for me.

Slow yesterday and gave the ball away.

Still don't think Manning is a left back, fine when he has the ball but positioning and defensive work a bit worse than Bidwell for me.

Would have him in midfield, especially if Freeman goes, but he said in the programme this is the first time he has played at LB - think we need specialist defenders - so no to Cameron/Manning in the back 4 from me.

I thought we looked like we were really trying to win today. The difference between the teams was they were a bit more confident and well drilled around the penalty area. But outside of that, they didn't look like the £79 million market value team.

Tbh if it was our team that was worth that much and getting their wages, I'd be well hacked off.

I love BOS's positivity. He loves to run at players. Just needs to work on the final ball and his shooting.

Manning looked good today. I wonder if it's easier to play left back when you haven't got Lynch alongside you. He didn't seem to be drifting across inside so much today.

Team spirit seems to be steadily improving again.

Introducing younger players doesn't make us a worse team. Who'd have thunk it?

the one thing i'll say about bright is that he sometimes drifts out of games ... he likes to get the ball in space and run at people and is good at getting the ball with his back to goal and turning... but sometimes he goes through extended stretches where he wont get on the ball and lacks a bit of incisive movement off the ball.

thats in stark contrast to shodipo who kept finding himself with the ball...

manning was rly good... his passing from left back is excellent.

i mean, to be fair.... do you expect manning, whose literally playing leftback for the first extended period of his career, to be anywhere near bidwells standard positionally, who has close to 200 championship appearances as a left back?

he now has another match, a summer to study and a preseason to hone his left back instincts.... he will come good there... and the defensive positioning mistakes he makes can be covered by his good athleticism

one thing that i think manning lacked yesterday (and perhaps in the other matches, but i didnt notice until ystd) was that he does not overlap at left back... he seems to like to hit the early cross rather than get further up the pitch.... perhaps he's a bit uncomfortable getting too forward now. and to be fair, hes rly good at playing that deep cross (like the one against derby where matt smith missed a free header).. but thats another thing he needs to work on

I would love to see us keep Freeman and Luongo, but they are two players who we can get a fee for so this will stave off FFP for a year and together with shedding some of the other high earners will give us chance to bring in some complimentary older heads to work with the younger players.

Not sure we can play Smyth and Chair together, but it will be a long-season so plenty of time to give them both opportunity. Certainly couldn't put those two, plus BOS, Shodipo and Eze in the same team at once, but that's quite a bank of attacking youth to shuffle.

What I was really interested to see (from my seat in EL) was how much Eustace was talking BOS, Eze and Manning through the game. Particularly Manning as he is learning a new position, very quickly and to good effect.

I think Manning will end up at LB where he can play at a much higher level than as a central midfielder.

BOS has had 28 appearances 0 Assists this season which I think says a lot about his decision making and final ball

The BIG questions is where are the goals going to come from? That’s been our Achilles Heel since Chazza left...

Agreed. But we also need to find a way of keeping the Goals Against column down to the 50s, not 70+.

There's an awful lot of recruitment to get right, if we aren't to finish in the bottom 3 next season. The youngsters look promising but a few wise old heads (a la Derry, Hill, Dunne wouldn't go amiss).

Re 1st paragraph, no I don't which is why he shouldn't be playing there!

Its like playing Smith in defence and saying its OK, if he's no good because he hasn't played there before.

Surely more sensible to play a left back at left back and let Ryan develop his game in the position he has played in all his life!

Not always the case that players are best in the position they started out playing. Remember Thierry Henry? Or more recently the striker Bolton had at our place, who started out as a goalkeeper?

He's not 12 though is he?

Can hardly said to have 'started out' in midfield at his age!

Not sure what age has to do with it. Thierry Henry was a winger at Juventus immediately before joining Arsenal.

Fair, although "28 appearances" only actually includes 8 league starts, most of which he was subbed off.

yeah, but the difference is that manning is already a pretty handy leftback even accounting for some of his shortcomings... he can improve his positional play and reading of the game with time

as for the position hes played all his life, manning was initially a striker in ireland and started dropping deeper and deeper. while at qpr, hes played central midfield, left back, left wingback and a midfielder with license to make late runs into the box. its not like hes had a steady position

and yes, while i agree id like to have a more experienced option, we're operating on a shoestring budget next season. if we can get a leftback on the cheap without having to pay a fee or high wages, why not throw him in?

The positive is that being a QPR fan will always be as cool as it gets because we are still the coolest team. Being sh!t doesn't make us any less cool. And it shows we have integrity and strength of character as individuals. When you tell a person in the know you're a QPR fan (or any non top ten team), you go up in their estimation immediately. And i like the fact it suggests i'm somebody who can't be manipulated easily.

When somebody asks what team you support, i'm sure we all take a huge sense of pride in saying QPR. It is something for all of us to be proud of. Imagine how awful it feels saying Spurs or something naff like that.

Plus, it has to have toughened us up mentally, coping with all the constant misery.

Career assists I think is 2 in about 80 appearances Great feet and pace, abysmal decision making and crossing. As a winger (especially one who does not defend) he should be looking for 10 + a season. Every single day in training he should be practising beating his man and dropping that ball between the penalty area and six yard box so the striker knows where to go every time.

Since this thread is still about, I'm going to be bit of a downer and say in response to the OP that it's not that much of positive that Shodipo looked good because he looked pretty good on his debut at the start of the 2016 season and has only made a dozen appearances since (hampered by injury, I know).

The new manager needs to turn these promising starts into first team players or we need to let the poor sods go.

He's an intelligent enough player to learn the positioning, you can't teach Bidwell the passing, crossing and skill stuff. I think it suits him and his game

...this articulates everything I've felt since primary school about being a QPR fan. Would far sooner support a proper club (eg, QPR) than be a "grey man" of football.
