I've worked mostly in organic growing and Permaculture teaching and design for 25 years. I did some free online mentoring through Facebook recently got good feedback. Always happy to help out gardeners.

I’ll definitely do that. This year is all about clearing the soil but I’ll get in touch next year for sure.

I've got me tomato's 2M apart. Have a nice day.

| Allotments (Non QPR) on 16:27 - Jun 11 by MrSheen | Friends of mine got one, and learned everything off their Portuguese neighbours. They were hardly allowed to do anything themselves. The only rule is, you have to keep showing up, because people get very aggrieved if a plot is allowed to go wild. Another friend developed a hatred of badgers, who are the biggest threat to the crop around here. He started leaving margarine pots with his own poo in around to ward them off. |
God i love Badgers. Used to have a sett at the back of our house in Cornwall. Used to feed them peanuts every night. I'd stand stock still in the middle and they couldn't see you. I remember once having 14 badgers around my feet eating. So calm and beautiful. Fckuing scumbag farmers came and murdered them. I have happily murdered the farmers if i was allowed.

| Allotments (Non QPR) on 18:12 - Jun 11 by BazzaInTheLoft | I was thinking Raspberries / Blackberries etc so I can fool myself that I’m producing something cheaper than the shops |
Blackberries are a waste of time. Somewhere near you is a patch of waste land covered in brambles where you can get them for free. Raspberries however are excellent - easy to grow, permanent bushes if you're into the permaculture lark, essentially vertical crops so good for use of space, not many diseases or pests. You can go for early and autumn varieties to spread the season and try some varieties you won't get in the shops like Allgold. Hybrids such as loganberries are excellent too but you'll need to provide supports. Blackcurrants and redcurrants also give big crops, worth looking at half-standard bushes (bit pricier but a lot easier to harvest.) Gooseberry is another pretty easy heavy cropper. All those more expensive than growing from seed obviously but worth it for the long-term investment IMO. Spuds are pretty easy and can be a good way of clearing weeds in your first year - you have to dig the whole plot over to get them in in the first place, the leaves help suppress weeds while they grow, and then you dig the whole thing over again to harvest them. And they keep. If you eat spinach or similar chard is easy and will look after itself once established. Will happily grow under fruit trees if you're allowed trees (some allotments you aren't, God knows why not.) And the more manure you can get on the better.

Thanks. Yeah I’ve been told Blackberries will just invade the whole plot. Defo going for the raspberries. There is a horse paddock next door and I’m told they we can just help ourselves which is good.

| Allotments (Non QPR) on 09:55 - Jun 18 with 791 views | BklynRanger | How long did you have to wait for Bazza, just out of interest? I I've thought about it but wouldn't really be up for the intensive growing and tending bit, not at this point anyway. More interested in scattering a few hardy perennials around, comfy chair, three or four socially distanced hours away from the old ball and chain. Don't know if that's acceptable or would you be shunned by the hoard? | | | |

I'm secretary of our allotments site and the waiting list has trebled since the beginning of March. I've heard similar stories from elsewhere.

Around two years so I was really surprised. Was told it would take 5-10. I’ve found everyone really friendly to be honest and there are quite a few people with little patios and chairs. I’ll be doing the same.

Bazza, get your asparagus in asap as it takes 3 years to crop fully. My wife did her once yearly gardening mine sweep and "dug the weeds up". My asparagus was almost 2 years old and approaching it's first modest bounty and it ended up in the compost bin. Outrageous. [Post edited 18 Jun 2020 11:36]

Better off growing the things the Supermarket charges a lot for and because you'll be growing it organically, the taste and quality are 10 times better. Purple sprouting broccoli is delicious, runner beans, sweetcorn, beetroots, Then next year, the Tomatoe plants, so many beautiful varieties to try with real flavour out of this world compared to bland mass produced ones, even supermarket vine tomatoes are terrible in comparison. Best of luck with it.

Horrendous! I’m going for an allotment full of dwarf Cherry tree with the intention of making it into booze. I had a chat with some of the Allotment Faces and they say Cherries is the only thing they don’t grow so encouraged me to go for it because they like variety. Cheers for the advice though. It was down to about a year - actually the lowest in years. Recent applicants will have a long wait.
