As i understand it the 'sacking of Baltimore' was carried out by pirates from north Africa. This was very common on the coast of Europe for many years.I would still like to see some proper evidence Cromwell was involved in slavery in Ireland because to be honest at the moment i dont believe its true.
My point was Baltimore was piracy so I agree.
As for Cromwell, fair enough. There's books and articles out there, some stick to the old doctrine that the Irish were never slaves but indentured servants, some more modern ones make the point that involuntary indentured servitude is slavery. Both are different to being a convicted criminal or a political prisoner.
I have read figures of between 50,000 and 150,000 of the 500,00 population loss in Ireland during his genocide here as being attributable to slavery. Who knows if either figure is right. Even Irish historians are debating amongst themselves.

Really like Willock, but don't expect this one to go past general interest - he'd cost a fee and it may be that Green and Adomah will do for us as free alternatives.
Still, if there's a chance then it's a good one to get. His brother Joe is close to Arsenal first team but he's one of a clutch that came through at a similar time that looked good. Not sure how time in Benfica would have helped or hindered, but Banfield will know all about him and his wages should be in our structure. Let's see.
Never thought of the Banfield connection. Good call.

I know nothing about the Irish side of this but extraordinarily some (quite a lot, I believe) of the North African piracy off the coasts of northern Europe was carried out by English pirates who had converted to Islam.
This explains why North African corsairs suddenly appear off the coasts of Devon and Cornwall in the C17th instead of sticking to their home turf of the Med. They were very good at navigating the notoriously rocky shores of Cornwall because they were Cornish.
I expect the Cockings were involved

Is there any historical evidence that people from Ireland in that period were enslaved in the normal sense of the word and not just people who were deported for being involved in uprisings or crimes of one sort or another?
For many the crime was simply that they were Catholic or simply Irish. Cromwell himself reported to parliament that he shipped most of the Irish soldiers captured to the Caribbean, 9/10 in some cases with the tenth executed
When Cromwell started in Ireland the population was estimated at 1.5m when he finished it was 600k.
I suppose you could say many were involved in uprisings if you look at it purely from an english judicial perspective. You could also look at it from the perspective of an indigenous population defending their freedom against an invading, persecuting enemy.

Thanks, Lazyfan.
I know very little about him.
I like the fact that he's of Montserratian descent. It means there's a good chance also has West Cork blood. The tiny island was 'home' to slaves from Africa and also slaves (as well as some paid labourers) from West Cork. They intermarried freely from the very beginning. To this day, English on the Island is spoken with a distinct West Cork accent.
Having had a neighbour from Montserrat in Wembley and now a whole family from the island a few doors away, I can confidently say there is no hint of any Irish accent, let alone West Cork.
Sorry ancient history has nothing to do with a Rangers transfer thread. I suggest if you want to talk about other things you should stick to the toilet walls that is Instagram. This is a Rangers forum . Full stop.

This RTE documentary clip from the excellent Radharc series back in the day is what alerted Irish people to the old links, Boston. Some of the accents are uncannily similar to the West Cork accent. There have been RTE programmes since, especially after the last eruption, but this one does the job.

Beat me to it.
Cant claim any knowledge of it other than I typed Irish in Montserrat into Google to find out more and it was recommended. Can see the influence though!

i looked Cromwell up in my go-to history book, and this is what it had to say on the man
"Charles 1 was a Cavalier King and therefore had a small pointed beard, long flowing curls, a large, flat flowing hat and gay attire. The Roundheads, on the other hand, were clean-shaven and wore tall, conical hats, white ties and sombre garments. under these circumstances a Civil War was inevitable."

had the English pirates been initially captured and turned to Islam out of expediency?
Edit. read up on a bit. the answer to my question is - evidently not

I'd be staggered if we are going to spend a million pound on anyone at the moment

I'd guess it's an eagerness to build up the Eze pipeline reputation. More important than ever, and they may think this is the time to nip in for players who might not happen in a normal window.

I think that would imply somebody trying to post in the manner of Brian McCarthy. This was actually the work of the man himself.
Well! You got me thinking, so I looked up the definition of “McCarthyesque”, which is apparently “characteristic of McCarthyism”.
McCarthyism is defined as
“the use of indiscriminate, often unfounded, accusations, sensationalism, inquisitorial investigative methods, etc., as in the suppression of political opponents”.
I rest my case!
Grovelling apologies Brian! 😘

I am totally torn between following Trump's sudden bleach injections and transfer to hospital, QPR's shock signings of several strikers, and the revelation that there are black Caribbean people who speak with Irish accents.
Any chance we could combine all these topics in one thread, so I don't have to keep flipping?

Last time I went to Barbados, did an impromptu tour of the island with a taxi driver and stopped at Holetown to be informed that this was where the English first landed and offloaded slaves, including Irish slaves. Now one of the favourite beers in the Caribbean is Guinness, not the namby pamby stuff we get here but the 7.6% export stuff. Coincidence or what? They also mix it with a local tonic drink called Magnum, which tastes a bit like that cherry cough medicine you had as a kid but will give you strange dreams at night.
