I think Maguire is a good player but his head is clearly not in a good place. Play him in friendlies, maybe, but not in a competitive game like last night.

I like Southgate but he needs to stop messing around with formations and squads ,
He also needs to stop this obsession with mason mount he offers nothing, that game last night was crying out for Grealish especially with us being down to ten men , Grealish can get a free kick and get an opponent booked , I fear his talent will go the same way as Hoddle & le tiss
Plus points though are
Coady a natural leader at the back
James who did more in one game than TAA has in 10 for England
DCL looks the part
Ings who only got one start but looked good
Winks did ok

Negatives
Kalvin phillips does he pass forward ?
Declan rice just awful and why is he in the same team as phillips
Dier accident prone
Kyle Walker at CB it doesn’t work
Mason mount
Picking Maguire
Not picking a left back other than Chilwell
Not getting the best of Sancho

I would hope that the likes of Barkley , Ox , will come back to that midfield as it was atrocious last night , we missed sterling and deli Ali who imo if he gets games should come back to that squad

Spot on. Mount is rapidly turning into Lampard Mk II at international level which isn't a compliment. He is completely anonymous like his club manager mostly was.

Grealish I fear will be another in the long line of creative players like the two you mentioned plus Laurie Cunningham, Alan Hudson and our own Stan et al that aren't trusted by England managers and will ultimately go for the safe option.

Southgate after a promising start is worryingly turning quite defensive, especially at home. If any other England manager had played seven defensive players at home in the past they'd have been crucified but Southgate seems to be getting a relatively free pass.

Southgates luck ran out.

Alex Scott was totally correct, no creativity, I think Redknapp and the presenter were shocked at her frankness. I like it, not a bunch of mates of mates.

Back 3 ain't working. Walker was better on the wing than any of the other midfielders. Grealish needs to be in the team along with Calvin to support Kane. Rice and Dier are crap. Maguire is average. Coady the newbie did way better than both of them put together.

Sterling needs to come back and Rashford needs to up his game too. I suspect Southgate will keep going with the 3 at the back as that is what he knows.

zzzzzzzzzz

When he was playing 4-2-3-1 in the qualifiers most of the pundits were slating him saying we were wide open at the back and needed to play a back 3. I think the biggest problem he has is trying to find the right balance between all these attacking players and protecting the defence. Not an easy balance to strike

How come Sterling didn't play last night?

Same old problems.
Look good against poor teams, so usually qualify for major tournaments very easily. But when they get there, all the defensive weaknesses are brutally exposed. Add to that, the lack of creativity from so many "water carriers" playing at the same time.

Nothing wrong with striking a balance but a key consideration should also be the quality of opponent you're up against and the style of football they play and adapt accordingly.

I remember Hoddle getting stick for the Batty/Ince midfield combination which worked a treat away to Italy with Gazza in front but against other teams, left us bereft of ideas at times.

For games like yesterday's I can't understand the logic for sticking to a Rice/Phillips pairing with Mount in front. It's ultra conservative.
