as discussed before, Carroll plays much deeper, setting off moves rather than playing the final ball.
He's been really good this season, one of our top 4 performers with Chair, Dieng and Dickie. A real blow. I imagine we will definitely be getting one if not two CMs in in the next 10 days.

I agree with the former, but still thinks he flatters to deceive. To what end is he one of our better performers? What does his inclusion, his signing, mean we've done without? Hypothetical questions I know, especially considering our budget.

I've long thought, and occasionally mentioned, that i think Chair could be well utilised in that position, with greater energy levels and greater staying power a plus. Are we basing a large part of our game on a player who fades as the game approaches half time?
while Carrol does play deeper I still think he should be more influential in the final third.

Of course, I wish him a speedy recovery.

Would say this will be a loss for sure the way we play. Bit of a change, but does anyone think Chair could potentially be a solution playing further back, has an eye for a pass and not scared to get on the ball?

absolutely

when he first started making appearances for us, he played in central midfield... i recall an fa cup match against MK dons where he sat deep and was just constantly recycling the ball (i believe i compared him to luka modric on this message board)... hes just a very versatile player- hes also played as a true second striker, so he can be slotted in quite a few place

defensively, im not as sure... i havent paid attn closely enough to carroll to see how he positions himself/reads the game in defense, but hes probably better than chair whose defensive strength seems to be just closing people down very quickly (which is less important in deeper midfield)

Wasn’t a big Carroll fan but he has been one of our best midfielders this year , if he can get some fitness and complete the rest of the season then I don’t see why we can’t give him another year

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

He's definitely done enough for another year.
I like signings like that, under the radar, under hyped, and over achieve. Dom Ball was similar last year.

Similar to Grant Hall in his first year as well

I think he may well get another years contract.....personally I would not give him one. I think we need better.

Why, because he rarely lasts a full game, he rarely plays a good game for 90 minutes when he does finish a game (not sure if he played a full 90 minutes against Reading but 1st half he was on the ball all the time but 2nd half he disappeared), he does not do enough going forward and when he does get forward his still doesn't take the difficult through ball, he look simple still, he cant tackle, he may become very injury prone, too old (in his 30's),.

If we want to progress we need a lot better than a 'failed' Championship player that we have given a years contact.

" too old (in his 30's),. "

Carroll is 28 (29 later this year) so not in his 30s yet

Delighted with last night's win of course - but I think there was definitely a Carroll-shaped hole in the midfield.

Don't know what you've got til it's gone?

Agreed. The conditions didn't help but our ball retention was poor last night and we really didn't link backs to forwards very well. Carroll has been our best player for that.

Interesting what he says about Bettache in that - basically he thinks Bettache should go out on loan so he can get full matches under his belt, but if we can't get two loanees in Bettache will stay.

Sounds like Warbs thinks he's not yet ready to start in the Championship but will have him on the bench if we can't get the right loanees in.
