Nina Simone was incredible. I also really like Joan Baez’s voice but not mad about her music.

Anyway Nina Simone.

Ella Fitzgerald, controlled power with delicacy - perfect pitch.

This would be one of my desert island Discs for sure:

For a great voice Aretha or Dusty, although I'm not a big fan of the music they produce.

I do like Laura Marling, Goldfrapp, Natasha Khan (Bat For Lashes) and Beth Gibbons (ex-Portishead)

For left field Courtney Barnett

I don't know how I managed a duplicate blank post but that is a First for me.

I had said the Paul Young backing singers the Fabulous Wealthy Tarts.

Beth Gibbons, absolutely

And while I wouldn't push Courtney Barnett to the front of the line for "singers," in terms of performers and/or guitar heroes in a live setting, yes. I've seen her twice and she gives such a good show.

Yes, I've always liked this version and bought the CD just for the one track. Same arrangement as the Ketty Lester but very warm. In the same vein, I bought a Ketty Lester CD for this song although there are some other good 'uns on it.

I'm ardent for jazz especially female vocals. Most names would be unfamiliar to folks on here but, oh God, there are so many. Ernestine Anderson, Dakota Staton, Lauren Newton, Carmen McCrae, dozens really.
