KEITH RUTTER 17:00 - Jun 24 with 1502 views | gazza1 | The first centre half I saw play for the R's.....proper old fashioned, no nonsense No 5. RIP
KEITH RUTTER on 17:04 - Jun 24 with 1474 views | jeffranger | Sad news & yes agree no nonsense centre half, not blessed with skill, saw him a play & also shows your age! RIP Keith
KEITH RUTTER on 18:54 - Jun 24 with 1380 views | colinallcars | RIP Keith. He was the first centre half I saw as well, as a nipper. Petchey - Rutter - Angell. What a half back line, they were as tough as teak.

KEITH RUTTER on 20:03 - Jun 24 with 1263 views | Addinall | He wasn't the first centre half I saw but I do remember him as being a solid performer. Would have missed a lot of his games due to national service.
KEITH RUTTER on 21:13 - Jun 24 with 1185 views | longbottom | Me too. Wonderful servant to the club over many years. R.I.P. Blimey it looks like a few on here even older than me.
KEITH RUTTER on 22:23 - Jun 24 with 1111 views | kernowhoop | I also have fond memories. Keith was a stalwart in a defence that lined up in the 1950s style as - Springett, Woods, Ingham, Petchey, Rutter and Angell. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

KEITH RUTTER on 11:11 - Jun 25 with 898 views | colinallcars | I know the memory plays tricks but I seem to remember the team being more or less set in stone - Drinkwater, Woods,Ingham, Petchey, Rutter, Angell and so on. Nobody seemed to get injured, suspended or dropped. As I say, perhaps my recollections are oncorrect.

Fûck me, this must be the oldest thread ever on LFW apart from Brian unless he lies about his age!

KEITH RUTTER on 12:29 - Jun 25 with 824 views | slmrstid | 362 games in 9 years is an average of 40 games per year...impressive record. RIP to him. Would be worthy of a posthumous Forever R's induction if he's not already in with that record. I fear with Forever R's some players who played hundreds of games for us decades ago will be missed, simply through being forgotten and not many people being around who remember seeing them play.

I don't know but did they do suspensions in those days?? Maybe just a booking!!! I would expect 'no play, no pay' in those days.....and they, just, played with injures back then.

They did indeed play on with injuries. The FA only introduced subs - just one at first - from the 1965-1966 season onwards.

Completely different game. Bert Trautmann, of course is the most famous injured player to have carried on playing in a match but it was a frequent occurrence I don't know much about Rutter which is probably because he played in-between the side that won promotion to Division 2 and the 1966/67 - 1968/69 side. What kind of defender was in in terms of style? Who would those who watched him play most compare him with?
