I heard an academic chap on the radio describing how, in the early days of professional football, crowds would often adopt popular Music Hall songs of the day as their teams' anthems. Newcastle's Blaydon Races is one that has survived, as is West Ham's I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles.
I can't find any reference to this online, but here is a (rather lengthy) academic account of football chants in the Victorian / Edwardian era:

Watching The Big Match Revisited and the like from the 70s and 80s, loads of fans from different clubs sang YNWA. But now it's the preserve of Liverpool and no one else. Has football become more tribal? |  |
