If FIFA really believed in inclusion they’d include Ireland’s co-efficiency points from the six nations rugby and GAA. The current rankings are a travesty.

I suppose in general I mean more football watched and played. I’d like to think more Qatari kids are playing football today than last year.

Agree that it doesn’t need a WC to do that and in reality it’s about commercial exposure rather than any footballing reasons isn’t it.

Agree. I also just think it doesn't matter if football isn 't popular in some countries. Other perfectly decent sports are available, that are probably run by much less corrupt organisations.

As long as a country has some sporting interests, and as long as those 'sports' aren't tennis, rugby, darts or snooker, which aren't sports, it's fine.

Bare bones.

Modern 4G surfaces have ruined that sport.

I deliberately didn't watch last years World Cup and I am probably unlikely to bother with this forthcoming one either.FIFA is a corrupt organisation that pretends to be inclusive and benevolent but it's just another means for a select few out of touch rich to make more money and massage ego.

Football as a game and a social experience is still within me to enjoy but the organisations that run it now are just completely money driven and out of touch.

The fact that there hasn't even been a very good World Cup since the 1980s says everything you need to know about FIFA and their continuing expansion of the tournament.

Love the world Cup but the more teams in it just dilutes the quality

Don't really think anyone at FIFA is in it for the love of the game Danny. They're blinded by money and decisions are made on that basis, not things like logic. The most obvious example being that nobody on the selection committee thought "isn't it a bit hot in Qatar in the summer" when awarding that world cup and then realizing AFTER it was awarded that they might have to move it to winter

If they want to expand it I'd have gone with 40 teams. 24 qualifiers from normal route, next 16 teams play a single "play in" game each to kick off the world cup before the group games start, end up with your standard 8 groups of 4.

Works perfectly well in both baseball for the "World Series" and College basketball March Madness

As I have said before I have 2 sons at FIFA , come and sit with us at LR and then tell me they dont love tthe game. The reason this format is coming for 2026 is because the 3 host countries are so vast . Teams and fans will not have to travel huge distances in the group games and the financial benefits the tournament brings can be spread more widely .

Never thought of the travel angle.

I'm undecided on the expansion. For a start, I thought the quality in this last WC was strong throughout, especially when we compare it to the 70's and 80's etc when the gulf was enormous. Also, I really love watching Nations from continents I don't usually see.

Pretty much takes the jeopardy out of qualifying for any half decent team. Years of dross for a few more surprises in the finals…with lots more mismatches.

That's the downside alright.

I doubt that Europe will be allocated many more qualification places as they already have close to 50%. New Zealand could be the biggest gainers as they (probably) will just need to win the Oceania group to qualify, rather than have to win a play off. Asia & Africa will possibly have ther highest increase in countries.

I'm pleased to see that North Africa might (at long last) be a host as Morocco have joined Spain & Portugal's bid for 2030.
