Bit of a history nerd and use various podcasts for my long runs. The big hitters such as Empire and the Rest is History are both great, and fully accessible to us non-historians.
Ear Hustle is another fantastic podcast - started out as a project in San Quentin hosted by inmates and has expanded into other jails across the US. Incredibly insightful - and bound to give you a resentment against the US prison industrial complex. The episode where the main presenter gets released a few seasons in had me in absolute bits. Really worth your time. |

My Dad Wrote A Porno is up there as one of the funniest I’ve ever heard .
For true crime, Cold was very good, as was Bear Brook.
For investigative podcasts, Last Man Standing about the journalist John Cantlie, who ISIS took, was utterly amazing. The Lazarus Heist about North Korea’s hackers was also fantastic.

Having just come back from Berlin, I was reminded of a podcast called Wind of Change a few years back. The metal ballad, “Wind of Change,” by the Scorpions was very popular during the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Decades later a rumour surfaced that the song wasn’t written by the Scorpions but by the CIA. It's a great story. [Post edited 1 Nov 8:25]

On history podcasts, have you checked out Dan Carlin 'Hardcore Histories'? I was really into them at one point. They are *long*, serious commitments. After I finished his series on genghis khan it was pretty much all I could think or talk about. I could probably have done it as my specialist topic on Master Mind |
It has been on my list to try out for a while - am in the middle of marathon training atm so long episode podcasts might be just the thing.
Reading John Man's "the Mongol Empire" at the moment which is a brilliant read so may have to check out the Genghis Khan series to go along with it. |  | | |

Great thread, I listen to a lot of podcasts while I'm working.
Another one for The Rest is History, newly found Athletico Mince and love it. Two not mentioned so far are Geoff Norcotts What most people think, and we have ways of making you talk, about the second world war and encompassing an awful lot.
I listen to a fair amount of true crime stuff because I have the time, a lot of it is throwaway, but ripcurrent, about two women who separately tried to assassinate Gerald ford, is actually really interesting, taking in american counter-culture.

On history podcasts, have you checked out Dan Carlin 'Hardcore Histories'? I was really into them at one point. They are *long*, serious commitments. Everything about Hardcore History shouldn't work. The long form 3+ hour episodes are just not done like that. The mixed season length - 3, 6, 8 episodes - is inconsistent. A single voice - Dan Carlin - is seen as a no-no.
But they are brilliant. I've been listening to them since Blueprint for Armageddon, the First World War season. 23 hours and quite brilliant.
The quality of podcasts is improving ow - fewer hobbyists are making them and the sound and editing is way better as the tech becomes cheaper.

Akimbo - Seth Godin's marketing podcast
Smersh Pod - a cool review of Bond films and associated movies
On Auschwitz - super quality about what the camp was really like
The Real Science of Sport - brilliant research into research into sport science
