When you need info advice, to Loftipedia you go.

Been suffering for well over a year now with tendonitis in my left ankle. I started out with physio, and moved on to having electric shock treatment since February. Regularly ice, stretch, and rest, but it remains stiffened, sore, and at times, bloody painful as in, waking up at night in pain.

There are a couple of other historic and recent factors in play. Got an MRI tomorrow on a knee I badly twisted two months ago, which really isn't helping!

I've Googled/Youtubed a lot, but nothing is alleviating the ankle problem. So, any fellow sufferers out there: any advice/suggestions will, I can assure you, be gratefully received.

How old are you?
I'm 47 and had similar this year. Mine was pain at the bottom of the heel, almost like someone had kicked me.

From talking to a physio its related to the calf muscle being too tight.

It's really painful in the mornings and eases off as I move around.

I suffered a slight tear in mine a few years ago - ironically caused by my fitness instructor over-stretching it after a workout.

I had several sessions of physio then switched to a trainer who specialised in sports injuries. I went to see him for several months.

The basic problem I had then (and which I still do) is that, if I don't stretch enough, EVERYTHING gets too tight; calves, hammies, glutes, lower back, upper back, shoulders and neck. Age makes this worse as liagaments lose their elasticity. All of this puts a MASSIVE strain on your achilles.

The exercises they gave me concentrated on regaining movement, getting a bit of blood flow to the achilles and then strengthening it.

It tool a very long but it hasn't trublem me since. But then again, I still do stretching. to keep everything (relatively) elongated.

@ Nick - 58. However, 55 of those years have been as an amputee, who's done way too much travelling and marathons. I knew the chickens would come home to roost some day, but I'd hoped they'd be a few years off. Mine is on the on the Achilles, but does go into the lower calf. Unfortunately, it does not ease off with movement.

@ London Scot - Solid advice. Worryingly for me, I am stretching a lot more, but it's a stubborn so-and-so. Given knee problems, I've scaled it back a bit, so maybe it's a case of get back in.

I'd repeat London Scot. Sadly much younger in my mid-30s but I've had tendonitis in my right ankle a couple of times from my running, my most recent flare up was this summer, and its the strengthening (and frustrating rest) that gets rid of it as much as just stretching.

See a good sports physio/massage therapist to help work the muscles and tie out knots/get blood flow going.

But exercise/strengthening wise its a lot of calf raises, raised calf raises, sitting wall squats doing calf raises, both constant moving and doing them where you hold for 10 seconds. Single leg and double leg. Walking around on tiptoes, oh and did I mention doing calf raises?

I've had ruptures in both achilles tendons for around 13 years now. After initially going to the NHS physio in the UK I knocked football/running on the head for over a year, then eased myself back into it but the pain remained.

It's remained ever since but I still manage to play as long as I'm religious in keeping it to just once a week - both ankles are just in agony the next day. I played yesterday and have just been shuffling around today

Best advice I ever had for a sore or strained achilles and calf was to put heel wedges in your shoes.
It just takes some of the constant strain away.

I had acute tendonopathy in one of my Achilles.

After 17 months of tiresome NHS referrals a customer of mine told me about Shockwave Therapy. 3 sessions and it was healed/heeled ;)

It did return on occasions and rather than pay £50 a session privately i bought a Shockwave Therapy device off DH Gate/Ali Express for £170 and now i use it when i feels like it needs it.

The worst thing you can do is rest these things. You have got to drop your heel and feel the pain and make it generate the blood to the problem area and clean it out and heal.

I had a bit of this after I fractured my ankle playing cricket. My calf got stupidly tight, but I struggled to stretch it cos it would set off my ankle.

Physio gave me some stretches involving putting a rolled up towel under my heel when stretching the calf so i could get the tension there without engaing my heel as much. Or standing calf stretch with your big toe raised by the same towel.

I found once I could start to get my calf looser, the ankle stuff eased up

An achilles is stubborn as there's very little blood flow down there.

Also, be careful talking my slightly muddled advice; other have pointed out the importance of the initial strengthening exercised FIRST which is, now I think about, what I was shown how to do before anything else; the stretching came a bit later, IIRC.

The bit about the heel lift inside your shoe is another tip I'd forgotten - I did that. I also switched to wearing running shoes at all times as that reduced impacts and set backs. Of which there can be many at the beginning of the healing process.

Be resigned to a recovery that takes many months. Get a pro to give you a programme to follow,

Acupuncture!

It helped resolve my intense sciatic nerve pain, so, although you've got a different issue, I'm sure they'll just stick the pins in different places.

If you've had this for over a year, then nothing to lose by trying alternative medicine, but do your homework to find a highly recommended one.

I had posterior tibial tendonitis in my left foot for a year, play a lot of badminton semi-competitively and had to stop for 12 months or so. Then 6 weeks ago I ruptured my achilles tendon in the same leg.

Someone mentioned tight calfs and I 100% agree - I should have spend way more time stretching them out every day, as well as strengthening all my other leg muscles so the calfs aren't taking all the strain.

For my tendonitis I tried acupuncture, helped a little. I found that eating a largely anti-inflammatory diet helped a lot. But ultimately you just have to rest up until it no longer flares up (have you considered a boot?). I feel for you, it's incredibly painful.

The surgeon who first had a look at my achilles had ruptured his playing badminton or squash (can't recall which) against his nephew. Desk job, bad posture, tight calves, lack of warm up......the usual :-)

Have you been offered cortisone injection as an option?
11 years ago (aged 47) I kept rolling my right ankle playing 5-a-side - thing just wouldn't clear up, it was swollen and giving me constant gyp. I resorted to having a cortisone injection which promoted blood flow/reduce swelling etc - absolutely marvelous, painful for a week or so but once it worked its magic I was back playing again 2/3 times a week within 6 weeks, swelling reduced and I never had a problem since. More recently, I've had plantar fasciitis in left heel been going on since March, went and had another cortisone 4 weeks ago and after 2 weeks its worked its magic and I'm pain free, no guarantees as to whether it will be a permanent fix but it's was defo worth a shot.

That sounds more like plantar fasciitis - bruising of the heel. You can get these pads off amazon to put in your shoes which have really helped me deal with this..

Had a frozen shoulder last year in both shoulders. Started with my right, then the left went too. Well painful, very restricted rotation movement in the arm and no particular reason for it. Had the health checks as can be a symptom of diabetes or high cholesterol. Both were in the norm. Had private physio treatment, ultrasounding and massage which did f*ckall except empty my bank account.

Finally got seen by a GP who diagnosed Capsulitis and a physio waiting list of 6 months. Nice. By the time I went, it had mostly cleared up. Took well over a year to be completely heal itself.

Wow I'm suffering the exact same, tendonitis in the left ankle. That coupled with painful muscles/joints in my legs caused by some medication I'm on and the daily dog walk becomes quite a chore.
I don't know of any way to alleviate it but I'm determined not to let it slow me down - I need the exercise.

I'm 61 btw.

Dear Loftipedia Habibis,

A really genuine thanks for all the suggestions and advice. Read them all and while I guess the slight concern is that a lot of what's been advanced I have and am already doing without much success it seems, a few little morsels sent my way to ponder.

I am, courtesy of @Silky, the proud owner of a bottle of castor oil and after I finish here, I will apply. However, it did cause a little 'issue' between Mrs PH and myself, which, unlike the tendonitis, was cleared up quickly. The way I pronounced 'castor' sounded similar to the French word for 'beaver'. Thankfully, Herself hasn't seen the 'Naked Gun' movies and only thought Loftipedia was suggesting beavers be culled for their oil as opposed to...

I guess the many shared experiences on here and LBlock's thread highlight many lives actively lead, for which some price is now being paid, but which we wish to delay going into debt for, so we can still get out there and give it some.

I hope young Rfosi reading these threads can learn the many advantages that come from stretching, strengthening work, remaining in motion, but also, of the need to listen to the body when it is saying 'oi!'

I had it earlier this year, made worse by doing a 10k. Just rested it for several months and did no running until my next 10k in September and it was fine. Probably not that much use if it's a long-term ailment but rest definitely worked for me.
