Smashed it, top bins, and bangers. 01:46 - Dec 4 with 3228 viewscharmr

When did these enter the football/life vocabulary.

Fishing show with Zamora, he’s ok, and some other guy using them like they are going out of fashion. Talking like a footballer being interviewed with the immortal questions

a. Talk me through etc
b. How did it feel etc

Just sounds ridiculous

Not half as grating as the "bring" "show" "we will be there" language of socials.

Maybe we're just getting old.

Using "drop" in the modern parlance makes no sense.

When is Clive going to drop the next match report? I'm confused.

"Remember to listen to me but look at her. Don't get it the wrong way round. That would be hideous."

I literally can't wait for it to drop

I don't think Bill Shakespeare would've liked it.
That said, I used to say things were “far out” and “groovy as a movie” so I'm a fine one to talk. Like, literally even.

The latest idiom I’ve seen travel across the pond from here is the use of ‘super’

‘Super’ excited and the most cringeworthy ‘super’ awesome

This fishing show I’m watching has 2 footballers fishing. Zamora and an Ipswich player Ali Hadeed.
Full on ‘Football Bantz’

Last night I caught another banger, followed by yes, a 36lb banging carp. Great trekkers as well to describe Zamora’s angling. I kid you not.

The bloke that lies down behind the wall when a team defends a free-kick outside the box is known as the ‘turf whisperer’

Thought it was a 'draught excluder'? That's probably old school now and 'cringe'.

Since when did the Dressing Room become the Locker Room, and the Ticket Office the Box Office?

Could be wrong, but I'll blame it on Americans (can never go wrong with that policy).

"Locker room": Argh, that one drives me mad. Horrible

The latest ugly Americanism polluting the King's English is "through," as in "It will be cloudy Monday through Wednesday".

I heard that on the BBC yesterday and was aghast.

A first world problem, though...

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

'Drop' in the colloquial sense must be at least three decades old if not more. Definitely common parlance in music/DJ/clubbing circles in the 90s, both in terms of a new record release and a DJ playing a particular tune during a set. Before that, 'dropping science' was a hip-hop idiom going back to the 80s.

Maybe so.

But yesterday in the newspaper there was an article about the government dropping a pledge to do something. They meant that they were NOT going to do it. But they could have easily meant that they WERE going to do it.

"Remember to listen to me but look at her. Don't get it the wrong way round. That would be hideous."

I went to Ireland last week and de-planed on two occasions.

My all time no 1 cringe.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

Touche my friend... add into the mix, asking the bar(person) "Can I get" (usually followed by something modern such as a 3/4 pint of sour molluscs tongue or some such). Pedantic maybe.

A bar lady in my local corrects every person she serves who says "can I get" when ordering their drinks. "No, you tell me what you want and I'll get it for you"

I think the consensus is that the English language continues to evolve. As to the Shakespeare reference, I'm sure I'm not alone when I read his plays in school and couldn't understand what various characters were saying, without guidance from my teacher. It'll be no different when future scholars will research social media posts from our current generation and try to get someone to help them with a translation.
