Development squad 12:53 - Jan 8 with 2430 views | wortonr | Noticed Santos, Bennie and EDB all started for them on Tuesday ( game was lost ). Maybe a loan out or two on the cards?
Development squad on 14:46 - Jan 8 with 2224 views | Stainrod | Santos and Bennie look miles off being ready to me. I like EDB but for whatever reason (maybe something entirely off-field?) he seems further in the cold than a forgotten cold war spy. Given Marti refuses to play him under almost any circumstance a loan would surely be beneficial and hopefully he can prove himself.
Development squad on 14:58 - Jan 8 with 2179 views | aston_hoop | Bennie has time on his side being 5 years younger than both Santos and EDB. I think EDB probably needs to move on for the good of his career, he's 24 and needs to play now. Its clear that won't be with us. Santos hasn't looked at the level required, a miss from our recruitment team so far and it wouldn't surprise me if he goes back to Portugal on loan to free up some space this January. Maybe see where we are with him again in the summer.

Development squad on 15:17 - Jan 8 with 2084 views | BrizR | Bennie was signed for the dev squad to begin with, he's only 18 or so. Marti seems to like him and he's been willing to cover a few positions (I think in one game he covered both left and right back, neither of which is his natural position?) so he's gotten some first team minutes but I don't think it was anyone's plan for him to be a regular feature this season. Santos has fallen firmly out of favour and no idea what's going on with EDB, Marti seemed to rate him when he first joined us but as time's gone on he's fallen further and further behind.

He's a bit Dozzel though isn't he? Never really influences the game or makes anything happen.

Not sure how you can negatively judge Bennie after the few minutes he’s had off the bench. Cifuentes obviously rates him to have an 18 year old on the bench so often: one for the future.

Not seen anything from EDB to think he is good enough for the 1st team. Looks good on the ball when given time, but that's about it. Bennie is a development player, 18yo on the bench, played a few 1st team minutes. What's not to like? Santos? Yeah, definitely a Lyndon Dykes one yard out miss that one. Back to Potugal with you. Tuck & Leahy maybe the breakout players next?

Probably not a fair comparison but no surprise he's fallen down the pecking order as Morgan has showed what is possible. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Apparently we gave EDB a new contract in the summer which I found a bit baffling. He's neat and busy but doesn't really achieve much. Bit like Faisal Bettache who incidentally played last season in the US third league (look away non-stattos) and scored 7 goals and two assists in 17 matches. This season he's got two assists in 15 in the US 2nd Division. Both much lower than the Champ but glad to see he's making a bit of a mark.

I liked Bettache. Wasn't sure he would make a high level but I thought he worked hard, broke up play well, and passed it simple. Sounds easy, but I'm amazed at how few modern midfielders do it. Glad he's doing well.

Yes me too Brian. But from memory successive managers didn't really fancy him which usually suggests it's time to move on.

Ah, I agree. As I said, not sure he was at our level (level? level? we have a level?) I just really liked watching him.

Yeah it all depends if we're talking about our performance against Swansea or Luton? Pretty much the same players but v different levels!

I've a vague memory of an interview with one of the U21s some years ago in which he said that if anyone was going to make it into the senior squad it would be Bettache. It's a shame it didn't work out for the lad.

Amrit Bansul-McNulty was the one for me. The loan to Crawley? destroyed his career IMO.

It was certainly a very odd loan, (Aldershot, I think), IIRC their fan forum said something along the lines of "he must have done something terrible to be sent here" I was hoping that it might be a bit like Eze going to Wycombe, but it looked more like they didn't know what to do with him and he was p*ssed off by being sent into exile. He had looked very good for us in cameos like that pre-season friendly v Man U (or was it the Leicester one?) but then so did Odubaju for about one game. EDIT, sorry Esox, just realised I was talking about Bettache and you were talking about Bansal-Mcnulty [Post edited 8 Jan 22:38]

Doing well! Maybe financially, otherwise he's running out for The Green Man Sunday morning team.

EDB was a one-year extension wasn't it, not a whole new contract? I think the feeling last season was that he was only being kept out because we were so dependent on having two of Field/Hayden/Colback in the middle and Andersen was first choice playing ahead of them, but he's a player who in theory suits Marti's preferred style so we wanted to keep him for this season. As it turned out we signed Madsen, Varane, and Morgan (to very different levels of success...) and the attempt to shift styles didn't work, so we're still dependent on the two in front of the defence (which all of Field/Varane/Colback are better than EDB at), which only leaves room for one in the 10 role where Morgan is playing well enough to keep out two much more experienced players in Madsen and Andersen, never mind EDB. The couple of times he has played he hasn't looked great, either. Bit of a weird player - he has some of the good attributes of all the players around him but not enough of any of them that you'd pick him over them. It's a bit of a cliche to say a player could use a loan but EDB is 24 and has only played in a handful of competitive games; he could desperately use some time in a team where he was getting picked every week just to find out what his real best position is and whether he can cut it in men's football because he's never going to get anywhere playing in one-off cup games and making occasional 60 second cameos.
Development squad on 09:59 - Jan 9 with 399 views | gazza1 | EDB is pretty average despite many on the very MB 'waxing lyrical' when he first made his way into the side.....the sooner we release him the better so we can look at other youngsters and give them a chance. Santos has not impressed me either. Bennie needs a bit more time before I make a judgement.

I think it's very telling that when it was clearly not working with Madsen or Andersen, Marti took a chance on 18 year old Kieran Morgan (signed for the dev squad, zero competitive minutes in his life) and not EDB. He can't even get off the bench in most games. Think it's worth repeating with Bennie that he was a dev squad signing who is only showing up at all because we have space on the bench and he's willing to come on as a sub wherever he's needed. He's being used exactly as you'd expect for his experience, getting a handful of minutes here and there to let senior players have a rest when we're closing out games - in a world where Chair and Dembele had both been fit we'd probably have never seen him at all.

We're actually playing 4141 now, but change back to 4231 when defending a lead towards the end of the game. Its why our pressing game has become so much better recently.
