Film 2025 17:13 - Jan 10 with 22223 views | E17hoop | To save polluting the TV thread, I thought I'd start a thread for the films we've seen this year. I saw A Real Pain the other day and it's a really nicely put together piece by Jesse Eisenberg. It unpeels like an onion, with each layer getting closer to the central pint. Good film. Babygirl could have been so much better. Nicole Kidman does well but it all feels a bit 'off'. Rewatched Anatomy of a Fall the other day - brilliant.

Film 2025 on 20:21 - Mar 4 with 1944 views | Toast_R | Watched The Substance last night. Quite like Margaret Qually in The Maid series but this was completely left field from that. Proper nuts along the lines Being John Malkovic. Quite enjoyed it but I think you need to be one some pretty strong stuff to fully embrace the whole picture. Demi Moore was great in it. Just a 5/10 Sunday night popcorn film? Is it being review bombed by neckbeards or something Edit: I looked up the infamous rotten tomatoes score and it seems audiences are more generous to it than critics so it's one of those [Post edited 19 Mar 9:23]

Film 2025 on 09:30 - Mar 19 with 1421 views | derbyhoop | Finally got round to watching Babygirl. Dreadful. If I wanted to watch porn, why go for the soft version with a 57 yo as the central character

Just watched it last night and agree. Its ok. Certainly not as bad as some reviews state. The Gorge also is better than I thought it would be.
| Smells like a trout farm in here |

Film 2025 on 15:38 - Mar 19 with 1261 views | dmm | I saw Mickey 17 yesterday. Pretty entertaining and I enjoyed the oblique quips with Trump in view. However, it's a lightweight watch and not one that'll stick in the memory for long.

Saw a trailer for The Gorge, thought it looked interesting, but it was one of those where the whole film was in the trailer, and it was obviously not going to be as interesting as I originally thought and I also feel like I've already seen it! | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I enjoyed it a great deal but Ruffalo began to wear pretty thin, and I wished the final act was played a bit straighter

I found it typical underwhelming Netflix fare. I was surprised to discover that at $320 million it's one of the most expensive movies ever made. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_expensive_films

Film 2025 on 15:44 - Mar 25 with 610 views | E17hoop | A few more recent views. Y2K is an abomination. I smiled twice in a comedy. I remember the sci fi tech films in the 80s and 90s and this wasn't even close to them. Complete rubbish. The Electric State was also bloody awful. Apparently they spanked 300m on this and, apart form the CGI, it's not great. Apparently the money went on the stars' salaried because they don't get distribution payments. Lucky buggers. I saw Santosh at the Rio in Dalston - yeah, I know - but it's excellent. A gripping police procedural which doesn't swerve the misogyny in India. Highly recommended. [Post edited 25 Mar 17:59]

You could tell a lot of money had been spent on it, the effects in fairness are absolutely unreal. Just need a real script sharpen and make the direction less....hackneyed

Film 2025 on 05:35 - Feb 28 by FDC | One for Disco maybe, All The Right Movies podcast are doing Blue Velvet this week. I dip in and out of ATRM but whenever I listen I remember how good the hosts are, and want to go and immediately watch the film they're discussing. Watched Alien Romulus on a flight last week, basically agreed with all the comments on here. Good fun, if you like Alien and Aliens it's an entertaining watch without doing anything especially interesting. Avoids the ponderous world building of the other sequels/ prequels Also watched Speak No Evil. Stressful, but better than I expected. James McAvoy having a great time chewing the scenery to bits. He plays sinister well. You know where the films going pretty much before you watch it, but kept me entertained |
I loved the original Speak No Evil (it's on Netflix) and rewatched it last night. Man, that's a tough watch.

I really really liked the book (slightly different title, Mickey 7) The film made a lot of changes from the book and I’ve got no problem with that. I thought the film was good too but it was quite strange. It felt like it couldn’t decided what kind of film it was supposed to be. Having said that I saw it at the cinema with my 15 year old son who hasn’t read the book and he thought it was great.
