1975 ish We score 7 or so and our players console keeper on his debut 21:58 - Feb 16 with 2678 viewsJules4367

I hope someone can help me with this query as I need the answer for (of all things) a funeral service on this Friday for my mum (lifelong R's supporter from Askew Road).

There was a home game, mid 70s, where we scored 7 goals (I recall but may be wrong) and the goal keeper for the other side (Perhaps a Sheffield side but probably wrong) was playing his first senior game.

At the end of the game, the Rangers players, Bowles, Venables, Francis went over to the keeper and walked off with him, putting their arms around him!

It was shown on the Big Match the next day and Brian Moore pointed out the empathy and consideration of the players for having done so.

Can someone please help me - correcting me if I am wrong re the score!

Do you mean the 7-0 home win against Burnley in 1979 when all our players (Allen, Goddard, Roeder?) consoled Billy O'Rourke (now RIP sadly) who was the debutant Burnley keeper? Allen got 4 IIRC. Happy Days under The Doc.

Strange as I have recollections of Venables consolling the keeper- perhaps it was a 6-0 drubbing in the Venables / Bowles era??
Definitely on the Big Match definitely a debut for the keeper.

But my m emory is not as good as it once was so I can see Bowles was in the team but perhaps Jimmy Hill or Motson pointed out the R's players consolling the keeper.

I was sure it was Brian Moore and Venables and co went to him?

Mty first thought was the 7-0 Burnley game in '79, though of course that was quite a bit later (no Venables or Francis). I think it was on MOTD with Barry Davies commenting, with 19-year-old Billy O'Rourke making his traumatic debut between the sticks. (I saw myself sitting in the Paddocks on the TV coverage, which gave me a bit of a thrill at the time, a day before my 12th birthday.)

Otherwise, a bit before my time, there was the 8-2 League Cup win against Sheff Wed in the League Cup game in Nov '73 - could that be the one you're thinking of?

That has more of a feel about it and you have mentioned Sheffield, which had stuck in my mind!
Do you (or anyone) know if the keeper was debuting for the Sheffield Team, that day?

Thanks but I see it says 'our' Peter Springett in goal so not a debut, which is the thing I remember. I wonder if Springett was injured pre-game???

Peter Springett was in goal, according to the match programme (who played for us till 1967 and then got swapped for his brother Ron in what is probably a unique fraternal transfer of its kind).

I and the programme may stand corrected of course . . .

The match report from The Mirror mentions a young defender scoring an OG after 3 mins maybe that’s your man they were consoling?

I'd beat a hasty retreat to the pub after that 7-0 Burnley game so missed the poor debutant getting sympathy from our lads. Quite touched when I saw it on the telly.

Allen only got two. He hit the post with a relative sitter from close range for his hat trick which Glenn Roeder happily followed up and tapped in for 7-0. In the MOTD video (as it was one of the two featured matches that day) you see Roeder wheeling away being congratulated by his team mates whilst poor Clive has got his head in his hands! (1:52 in the video)

Team that day:
Woods
Shanks
Gillard
Roeder
Wicks
McCreery
Bowles
Wallace
Burke
Allen
Goddard

Yes, that anti-celebration from Clive always struck me - he was more unhappy at not scoring himself than his team doing so. I suppose that's the selfishness of (great) strikers for you.

Stan was, of course, gone the following month for his period of 'communication by rumour' under Brian Clough, and incomprehensibly out of top flight football by the age of 31.

Barry Wallace playing for us that day also passed away very young (only 47) nearly twenty years ago from cancer. Poor bloke was only diagnosed the month before he died.
