When did the penny drop? 09:52 - Nov 23 with 5233 viewsTwoHalves

Down a YouTube rabbit hole recently, I came across an interview with comedian Catherine ‘Am I Bovvered?’ Tate where she discussed her addition to the cast of Dr Who. It was both funny and rather endearing when she confessed that she had not realised that the main protagonist’s ‘real’ name wasn’t actually ‘Dr Who’ but, rather, ‘The Doctor’ until she turned up for the audition.

This got me thinking (I know), what misapprehensions have we laboured under, maybe for years, before the scales fell from our eyes?

I, for example, can recall watching the original Bamber Gascoigne-hosted ‘University Challenge’ (‘Balliol Blenkinsop-Smythe’ etc) as a child growing up in the 60’s (and early-70’s at a push). The two teams seemed to sit above each other on the TV screen in a sort of ‘bunk bed’ arrangement and, for the life of me, I couldn’t work out how the ‘top’ team got up there. My dad’s explanation, as always, was ‘trick photography’ but this seemed inadequate to me. I thought there must be some sort of staircase, or ladder at the very least, situated off screen somewhere to allow them access to the top tier. Of course years later, and with the realisation that ‘horizontal split-screening’ was a thing, the truth finally dawned.

So, what baffled you for years, decades even, and when did the penny drop?

When I was a little boy I thought there was a limit to how long your voice lasted for and that when I was older I would lose my voice and become dumb.

Also, I thought that when countries went to war soldiers fought each other 24/7 and never slept.

I avoided eating tomatoes because I thought the seeds would get stuck between your teeth and grow into tomato plants.

Just remembered a joke, ostensibly about ‘dropping a penny’ told by a bloke called Bob ‘The Cat’ Bevan, an after-dinner speaker who made his name entertaining amateur, and later, professional footballers who would pay handsomely to have the piss taken out of them.

Bob would get briefed beforehand about the various ‘characters’ at these functions and, invariably, there would be someone who never got their round in or was ‘careful’ with their money (most of us will know someone who has these characteristics).

Anyway, the joke is that Bob would say, “I dropped a penny on the floor in the pub the other night. It hit (insert name of ‘tight’ person of your acquaintance here) on the head as he bent down to pick it up”.

I guess you had to be there really.

Another childhood fear was that my feet would grow too big to play football and that football itself would not exist by the time I’d grown up. This thread seems to be evolving into some sort of DIY psychotherapy session (but not so expensive)!

When I was a nipper, my dad told me “at least Mussolini got the trains running on time”
I went round telling kids at school how clever Benito was. Took me 'til about 12 years old to realise it was an army joke.
Mind you he could tell Sadiq Khan't a thing or two. No Richmond District Line today and 28 mins wait for Ealing Broadway. No announcements apart from No Smoking or Drinking Allowed.
Ps…let Sadiq off this time - delays caused by a customer incident. Must have been serious, but nothing on the news.

I'm not entirely convinced the Mayor's duties include day to day operations on the District line.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

I thought the Left and Right Banks of the River Seine in Paris got their names from the politics of the residents - students and writers on the south side, rich inhabitants around the Champs Elysees and the Place Vendome on the North. It took me decades to work out they were named from the perspective of someone drifting downstream.

Only realised the other day that the original arctic monkeys logo was in the shape of a monkey crawling. Played that first album so many times and somehow never seen it before.

I'm fairly sure the chant was Say Leslie Ferdinand - but Terry Cinzano interpreted it as Sir...

Years ago I was decorating a house with my mate Steve when Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall came on the radio. We're both half-heartedly singing along when it comes to a certain point and Steve sings, 'no dogs of Hasm in the classroom.'

I turned to look at him and said "who the fk are "the dogs of Hasm?"'
'Aren't they some kind of mythical beasts?' he says.
I had to enlighten him. 'It's 'dark sarcasm,' I said.

During a tea break at work a colleague, in her 40s, found out that the lyrics on Free From Desire are 'he's got his strong beliefs' rather than 'he's got his trombolese' - she genuinely thought it was some kind of brass instrument.

Back in the 60s I was absolutely convinced Paul McCartney had died and had been replaced by a look-alike. I'm still a little unsure it isn't true ...
