Having had cause to deploy an ‘asterisk’ in a frivolous post on another thread, it has nevertheless occurred to me that there could be some mileage in a new one devoted solely to the usage of that symbol. It’s a funny word, in my opinion, more so when repeated over and over again, but how often do we use it? When creating a password, maybe, or as a means of disguising a rude or offensive word (C*****a springs immediately to mind).

I once saw a poster, for example, advertising a performance in the East End by popular cockney duo Chas and Dave. There was, however, an asterisk immediately after Dave’s name which, on closer inspection of the small print at the bottom, said ‘Not the real Dave’.

Anyone else got an asterisk-related story?

* I’m aware that this thread may well be going absolutely nowhere!

20+ years ago I had an article published about ampersands. True story.
Living in Brighton & Hove at the time. One of only two cities in the world with an & in their name. Other in Australia IIRC.

What about Camber S&s ? Or S&wich ?

I often use an asterisk when correcting a mispelling or mistype on a text or social media.
