It just looks like someone at Sports Republic just forgot to exercise the additional one year option within the time allowed in the contract. I accept there were a few things happening at the end of the season but player contracts are just an ongoing issue for any club.
Given his recent improved health and the key goals he scored throughout the season, how was this missed?
Sports Republic really don't help themselves.

I don't know the in's and out's of all this, but from what I do understand this could be one hell of a cock up by the club and could prove very costly in terms of our promotion chances for next season. A good striker is almost priceless and hard to find. Ross was showing real promise and I fear now someone else will benefit from him after we nursed him back from a long injury. | | | |

Yes I'm sure it's now going to be more expensive to sign him as he will presumably want an improved signing on fee and the contract will now probably need to be longer than a year. Which means we are again gambling on him staying fit.
Having said that, there is of course the current risk for him that he seriously injures himself at the world cup and is out of contract.
If he stays fit, his goal scoring record when he plays will make him an attractive option for a lot of clubs. | | | |

Wouldn't it be great if a player for once realises that the people paying his wages (SFC) were loyal to him during those many months when he was being paid a decent salary for doing nothing other than try to get fit enough to do the job he's paid for, would actually pay back that loyalty (ok, with a contract discussion maybe) by staying.
I'm not saying he will hold the club to ransom (he doesn't seem that sort of guy), but who knows what his agent is like |  |

From Adam Blackmore's interview with Dragon (well worth a listen) the "mistake" was that we had the option to extend for an extra year but this needed to be done within 5 days of our last game of the season. So with our Wembley game cancelled we exceeded the 5 days and his agent/lawyer said "no can do", we can only assume we were keeping our options open as to what league we would be in given the wage costs versus injury record and could he cut it in the Premier League? So to be fair I think the blame here is with the EFL rather than SR? | | | |

Did you see his last game for Scotland? He came on as a sub and looked slow, unathletic and hopelessly lost, a bit like his first few games for us. I can't see him making their starting lineup ahead of Adams or Shankland. There's no way he'd be good enough for the Premier League, but, if he stays injury-free, he's good for 12 goals a season in the Championship. He's not interested Rangers or Celtic, so his alternatives to staying would just be other Championship clubs.
So, as Saintcole7 has pointed out, Sport Republic were quite rightly waiting to see which league we'd be in. The EFL then messed things up for us. [Post edited 8 Jun 14:14]

In my book that really underrates him. He's much better than that. If he's fit, he's the best CF we've got and the best we've had for a while, including Che Adams. The Scotland players aren't used to him, so no surprise that Adams fits better for them now, but given a choice next season between Che Adams or a a fit Stewart, I'd take Ross every time. He does a difficult job in an unflashy and efficient way and has moments of class that make the difference.
SR cocked up and if he goes, it will not be easy, or cheap, to replace him. SR will probably go for a cheap gamble and there's a good chance we'll end up with another Damion Downs. [Post edited 8 Jun 13:35]

I watched the game purely to see how he did if he got on
The game was over at half time, Scotland were just going through the motions and Bolivia were in damage limitation mode, so very little happened
It woulds be a shame if he left as when he's fit he's a very good championship striker, and that's the key issue imo, his history of injuries. From January to the end of the season was the first time since we signed him that he had a run of games and a lot of that was due to his game time being very carefully managed
My view is the club have done the right thing, I may be wrong but I'm sure read somewhere that we had to option to extend for another year on his current terms but were looking at a new 2 year deal on different terms
If we'd given him a new contract and he picked up another injury at the World Cup, many would be criticising the club for the new deal. He's a bit like Danny Ings, every time he goes down injured you think he could be out for months
Risky move by his agent, every club knows how unlucky he's been with injuries, so I would imagine will be pretty wary about the contract they offer him. At least our medical staff know what issues we have to manage

Agreed we need another to back up Larin & Stewart.
I'm not confident that Stewart would stand up to a full season in Championship.
Perhaps SR will take the cheap option & use Bereton Diaz as back up.

I don’t think Sport Republic are good owners, and wish they’d sell up.
However, this is not really their fault ( other than put us in a position to be kicked out the playoffs.)
Saints quite rightly wanted to know what division we’d be in before offering him a contract. The fact we got the boot from the plays off meant we were over the 5 day period.
Stewart and his agents think they’ll either get a better deal from Saints or a better deal elsewhere.
Time will tell if they are right. | |
