Was thinking the same, but wasn't that a John Smith's pub? If it'd been Robbies, i'd have been in there more than a couple of times before it closed, and vaguely recall a Magnet Ale sign outside [Post edited 30 Jul 15:07]

Definitely Robinsons when it closed. I bought the last pint of draught mild in there whilst a 5th form schoolboy. (Bitter had all gone.) |  |

The old Robbie's best, with the blue logo was a great pint but they changed the ingredients about 20 years ago | |

A Robinson’s rep told me around that time that the brewery were keeping hold of the licence with a view to transferring it to a new pub which was to be built as part of the town centre development but sadly I don’t believe that this ever happened which is a shame. | | | |

I have been in and out of the St John's Tavern when you weren't looking. A tiny terraced house of a pub, the only John Smith's tied house in town. Proper old school boozer.
Robinson's ales in the days of the St James Tavern and their other Rochdale tied pub then, The Healey, were magnificent.
Apart from Old Tom, none of their beers are as good now. Changed recipe's as D A says. Judd referred to Robinson's Mild. When the Cem re-opened in 1978, it was on handpump and our school year shifted a lot of it. 25p a pint. |  |

Yes, that's the right Smiths pub.
I once went in there with a mate to see his Dad on a Saturday afternoon mid-1980's and I happened to be wearing an earring, among other things.
My mate's Dad told him to never be seen with me in public again, and certainly not in that pub. | |

The Healey used to be my local in the 1980s.
Outstanding beer. The Old Tom was only available in winter and so strong that the landlord would only serve it in half pints or in a smaller measure glass called a pony.
Plenty of regulars used to have a pony to finish off at last orders. | | | |
