Tonda Eckert says Southampton are moving closer to completing a new signing after making encouraging progress in the transfer market ahead of the new Championship season.
With Ross Stewart having departed, adding another striker remains one of the club's priorities. While Eckert did not reveal which position a potential new arrival would play in, he hinted that supporters may not have to wait much longer for an announcement.
Speaking during Southampton's training camp in Germany, Eckert explained that negotiations are progressing well but stressed that transfers are rarely completed quickly due to the number of parties involved.
He said the club has made positive progress and hopes a deal can be finalised and announced in the near future.
Discussing possible departures, Eckert acknowledged that interest from other clubs is to be expected after the team's performances last season. He believes that attracting attention is a sign the squad has performed well and is confident the club will make the right decisions over any transfer business.
The Saints head coach also expressed his trust in sporting director Johannes Spors and the board, saying he is confident they will assemble a strong squad capable of competing this season, even if some transfer decisions take longer than others.
Eckert admitted he would prefer the transfer window to close before the start of the campaign, as most managers would, but accepted that the current system means clubs often have to deal with uncertainty after the season has already begun.

Mubama has scored two goals for City in pre season including one against Inter Milan . Hopefully He will be very keen to impress at Saints . He wasn’t great on loan at Stoke but hopefully Tonda can bring out the best in him. |

I hear you. This lad might be good at Saints, who knows. But having just brought in 30 million for Charles and just lost Stewart, most of us were hoping for a Vipotnik type signing. We would have been better off giving Stewart a 3 year deal and not having him play for one of our rivals and bringing in a player on loan who is a bit of a risk. Boro also brought in the Oxford striker withput parachute payments. Ot'd juat a bit underwhelming. [Post edited 9 Aug 21:23]

I don't think it's unreasonable for fans to see this below, hear that he went 10 games without scoring and worry that he might not be the answer. Fans can only go on what they read / hear etc. Boro spent big on the Oxford forward. Fans just want to see proven players come in ofcourse they do. It doesn't make them clueless for wondering why clubs like Boro have the money to buy proven players but Saints don't. This young lad might work.out, but ofcourse people worry a bit when the previous fanbase couldn't wait to get rid.

I’d prefer to concentrate on a player who’s just scored 2 goals in pre season for Manchester City including one against Inter Milan . He also scored 5 goals in 7 games for England Under 21’s in 2025. There’s also the fact that Stoke are a very bang average team who probably didn’t create many chances for him. [Post edited 10 Aug 6:35]

As the only time I saw him play at St Mary's, he got himself sent off for diving, I can't claim to have seen him much, but whenever we're linked with a player I look at the message boards of the fans he's played for to see what they have to say about him. As you say, their opinion is usually right.
But, there have been bits of promising form and perhaps Tonda can bring that out of him and get him scoring more regularly. If we do sign him, we have to hope that we'll be pleasantly surprised like we were with Larin. [Post edited 10 Aug 10:56]

Again, I'm not writing him off just pointing out regardless of injury he's scored 5 goals in 26 appearances at Stoke
OK we're better than Stoke and he may get more chances but it would be a massive gamble to pin our hopes on him and Larin getting the goals to get us promoted.

I didn't. I'd seen him play live a lot and suggested we should go for him
His record for Feyenoord was 54 goals in 73 games. People at the time were suggesting that scoring in the Netherlands was easy but there have been some great Dutch strikers who have been top strikers in England

He'll be there to bring on in the 70th minute to give Larin a rest I would.assume is the plan. Larin will be the main sriker and will start games I would guess. I worry if Larin gets injured or suspended. | |

I look at other teams message boards every time we buy someone without fail. The Stoke fans don’t rate him but then again they are bang average and some of it is sour grapes. Saints will create far more chances for him. If you read the comments many say he didn’t put a shift in which implies he probably didn’t want to be there. I expect Tonda will sort him out. I wasn’t surprised about Larin at all he’s scored many goals in his career, people were just moaning about the standard of opposition that he had faced.
