It's odd, but our status as their "Rivals" seems directly correlated to how much better or worse than them we are. We scarcely seem to have been considered as such since about 2007, yet between 1999 and then the rivalry seemed quite fierce.
It's almost as if they only try to play it down when they're being humilated on a regular basis. |  |

Watched them today. They do seem capable of scoring goals but defensively they are absolutely all over the shop. Atrocious even. They are very lucky they didn’t concede four or five. They were very very lucky to get a point against Wrexham and they are no great shakes either. |  |

I read that thread on CCMB this morning - even one or two more sensible ones on there are calling it out as a bit weird...
We brought the assaults on Swans fans at Wales games on ourselves apparently because we threw some seats once and chased some "kids" into the sea...You couldn't make such nonsense up It was going on long before those incidents.... I remember as a kid a section of their Jackson 5 looking Somaili mob in the late 70s throwing bottles and bricks into the away end which was full of kids and parents. Selective memories - they picked on Jacks during the 80s and 90s because they had the numbers, games were almost exclusively in their city and the support from the West dwindled. Overseas trips involved one eye on the dodgy locals and one eye watching your back from being attacked by your "own". No surprise that many gave up bothering. But you listen to them spouting and they don't take any responsibility for alienating an entire fanbase from following the national team.
My take on the Unionist thing is twofold that Swansea far more than Cardiff has been a hotbed of recruitment into the armed forces down the years and many served in NI during the troubles. Forged friendships with Linfield and Rangers fans and continued after they left the service. Swans fans being attacked at Wales games had an effect that a section identify as British and that Wales FC is a Cardiff led thing. The together stronger thing helped push this into the background in recent years but the East West sectarianism is apparently creeping back in ? Also the UJ winds up the Basseys a treat so it's done more and more just to annoy them....

Cardiffians have leaned heavily into the Wales thing because promoting the idea of Wales as a significant independent nation also promotes the idea of Cardiff as an actual proper Capital city as opposed to a regional administrative centre.
They genuinely believe that they're on a par with Paris or Berlin as opposed to Rennes or Wiesbaden. It's not about Wales to them. It's about Cardiff. The same kind of thinking leads to hundreds of millions being pissed away on an airport nobody uses because a "Capital City" needs one.
Swans fans seem happy to be Welsh as well as part of something larger. Cardiff fans seem to need to believe that they're the be all and end all. | |

I was the right age to see Swansea rise up through the divisions the first time round and that rise was from the late 70s into the 80s, I honestly never ever seen a union jack or any loyalist sentiment during that time at all, that is over a 6 or 7 year period, well into 3 figures for matches attended including 30 or 40 away games.
Swansea was a very Welsh club in sentiment, the fanbase from what i read was infiltrated around the year 2000 ?, marriage and shift work had got in the way by then, some online research some years ago suggested an English national front fascist type bloke came down here and tried to hide his past and apparently stood as a Lib Dem in council elections but got found out and went to Canada, not sure if Lohengrin knows something about him (but didn't want him named) and that was the start of it as far as I could tell, now if that date is correct that is quarter of a century ago but to an old timer like me it's a new thing and was not a thing back in the day, blydi immigrants. |  |

Between 74 and 85 Cardiff only played Bristol City for one season.
The relevance of that is football hooliganism on a wide scale started in the 60s but took off in the 70s and 80s and I remember the Swansea/Cardiff rivalry in the 70s/80s and knew Neath bluebirds who were fanatical fans at that time and I don't remember them talking about Bristol, I do remember trouble between Newport and the Gasheads at that time mind. | |
