Too many matches 08:41 - Sep 13 with 5764 views

Lots of debate recently on here about injuries and although I don’t think our fitness team are doing a great job it clear that lots of teams in this league have lots of early season injuries . I think it may be time to look at reducing the number of teams to 20 as per the Prem league
We have to stop for international breaks and have players in summer tournaments but have to ram in extra 8 games resulting in the mess we are just coming to the end of.
Not sure how it would impact revenue but re launch it Prem2 and raise the profile and commercial revenue may ease the reduction .

So Arsenal have had another 3 game week with travelling to Naples in the week. We went to SE London. Another game right up north last night and the likes of Raya, Califori, Gabriel, Rice, Odegaard, Tzolis, Havertz etc. all played again. Most of our players can barely play a half without some injury and then vanishing from the squad for periods of time. We are incapable of playing our best team week in and week out to get any consistency. It’s ridiculous. I would have thought the likes of Arsenal prepare their players in a very similar way to us, but we literally sign players made of glass.

Arsenal's squad cost a billion quid. We think we've pushed the boat out and had a good go because we might have spent £20m or so over the last 3 seasons. It's not a remotely reasonable comparison.

Two other things not mentioned. The strain on the pocket of the average supporter. Usually West Brom would have been close on a sell out especially given the league position of both teams but with Charlton a few days before and 3,000 supporters attending people are watching their pockets more.

And secondly, given the greater demands on players and squads with injuries mounting up right across the league what the hell does the EFL think in introducing a 25 player limit for clubs??? Surely this means that more players are more likely to be called up whilst carrying injuries. A 30 man squad would make more sense and if there are to be three game weeks then given that their are nine across the season one a month at a maximum makes more sense and a limit of six matches a month for clubs. Surely it’s not that difficult to work out?

Not that I’m swimming in cash right now but the Sky gods designating it worthy of a 12:30 slot was what put me off more than the money.

Increasing squad size would just give even more of an advantage to the parachute payment clubs and would make it even more of a struggle for us to keep within FFP.

Additionally, it reduces chances for Scarlett and other young players to further their development.

if too many matches, why have EFL extended the play offs to now top 8?
and i bet any in there won't be moaning about games played, just, can we go up? win at wemberlee?
this ties in with my injuries thread and i guess also debated at other clubs with a full physio room.
yet most are not from violent play as modern footy has no contact.
qpr have not had a real cup run in decades so play less games , imo. we have rarely made play offs, so less games. ie just the 46 and 2 mandatory cup games =48.
but one can say with added nations league, fifa club cups, extended world cup etc players at top clubs must be wrecks, declan rice for one last season , harry kane etc it is money over quality

Lincoln by coach will be exhausting... stuck on A road. Burnley at least will be direct in terms of driving. I suppose QPR uses coaches right or do they ever get a train?

Agree that there are too many matches and the league needs to be reduced or started earlier
Not a fan of becoming prem 2 - the EFL has clear identity and would prefer to be a standa lone brand

I’m a fan of blocking off the PL, bring the national league under the EFl umbrella, No PL teams in the EFL cup, 4 divisions of 22 and make it competitive again. Of course any long stay PL side that has suddenly found themself in the EFL wouldn’t agree.

I’ve always thought, 100 teams in the league structures, but the 4th division split into north and south. The gap between national and league 2 is minimal and it keeps the travel costs down for most teams.

It’s because they are made of glass that we can afford them. The Premiership players have quality and stamina to avoid injury. They are priced accordingly.

The distances between teams in the south could be longer than playing a team in the north league though.You could have Peterborough playing Plymouth instead of Lincoln.

They are some big away trips for Lincoln on the back of a busy set of fixtures (more than us and more than most of the Champioship) yet 2 away wins on the bounce with and the only niggle they have is Tom Melia whos a young lad on loan from Spurs, who has a hip niggle.

So some teams are performing despite the fixture list!

Sonny Bradley (CB) has been out since the start of the season and straightaway back for Saturday trip to Preston and yesterday trip to Bristol - both FULL 90 mins!!

I put this on here as Lincoln are my local team and obviously im very excited and pleased at how well run they are and have been over the recent years and this is obviously the first time in 65 years they have made it to this level of football and they certainly havent been disgraced at all. Far from it.

While we are at it, should we need a commanding CB then obviously Sonny Bradley is too old being over 30, but the just turn 23 year old Deji Eleweri bought from Forest Green? for £500k in only January (ex Charlton) is gonna be an excellent commanding skillfull ball playing centre half. Consistently very good and will only get better.

Yeah and you can always cherry pick to support the narrative you want to push.

You could’ve chosen Millwall since 29th August. Lost 5-1 to Southampton, 3-0 to Wrexham, won 4-0 to Bolton, lost 1+0 to Newcastle, lost 3-1 to Blackburn and drew 1-1 with Middlesbrough. That’s four losses, one win and one draw. And they have twelve injuries. According to your logic they’re a terribly run club. And yet most people agree they’re actually very well run and doing well in terms of performance in the league over multiple seasons, a good recruitment and sale record of players for good money.

Now if Millwall had been playing matches over a longer period they might have had time to get those injured players back or the players might not have been injured in the first place.

Personally I don’t think the teams making it in the league should be based on last men standing. I’d much prefer players like Burrell, Madsen and Lamptey managing a whole season and playing against similarly talented players from other clubs. And the actual evidence is, from people who’ve studied it not Nige down the pub, that players are getting more injuries than in the past.

Now I don’t think we’re blameless in this as a club. We’re certainly performing worse than other clubs across multiple seasons in terms of injuries. However if we’re put in a situation which makes the pressure on the players worse then we should be pushing against it not embracing it. And if we’re trying to reduce that pressure by rotating players rather than overplaying them then that shouldn’t be mocked and criticised in my view. Because all the mockery in the world doesn’t stop your hamstring from snapping.

There is no single answer to this problem, it's a combination of the many factors that have been mentioned.

Fixture scheduling, previously injured or unfit players, modern pitches, training and rehab programmes etc may all play a part.

Club may be partly at fault, and Ben Williams record here and elsewhere, away from cycling, isn't good but rotation was an effort to improve the situation. It may have helped to some degree.
