The international breakdown – Analysis 11:28 - Oct 5 with 1382 viewsNorthernr

LFW’s data analysts Andrew Scherer takes a look at the opening eight rounds of the Championship, who’s over performing, who’s under achieving, and what does it mean for QPR’s 26/27 chances?

Generally speaking my head begins to fry when I see lots of figures graphs and stats, so thank you Andrew for making it so decipherable. On a personal note, I would be quite happy to spend most of the season in and around the play-offs (where we are now basically) even if we ultimately fall short. I believe we are a fair bit short of being able to compete in the Prem (I still expect Hull to be relegated) and we have a couple more cycles to go through (including those elusive ‘big’ sales) before we are ready to really compete. I don’t want promotion per se only to be dismally relegated again 12 months later - been there done that.

Great stuff as ever, Andrew.

Easy to understand, but will read it again a few times just for it to sink in.

Thank you, and thanks all at LFW Towers.

Brilliant analysis, Andrew, thanks! I saw the 9th and had to laugh, though. I might put money on it right now

Thanks Andrew - Great read and plenty there to try and get my head around.

I still have a little niggle that we left some points on the table against Bolton and Charlton but I guess the away point at WBA could be considered a bonus point.

The play offs for me will be about player availability which already is starting to look a little worn around the edges. However if we can improve this I think we are in with a shout of the top eight.

We do need that big player sale at some point to weather that is in January or the summer remains to be seen but it is absolutely necessary.

Looking forward to Friday avoid defeat and that will also fall into the bonus point/s

Er yeah, I would definitely take a point at West Ham now.

Enjoyed reading that, thank you. I’ve always been fascinated by data and this will become more wide raging and used more frequently. XG gets some criticism but ultimately about the best way to assess vs actual points, good to see us doing well in this area.

Interesting read

Also justifies (in my own head) why I think the five points we e dropped are a travesty despite current league position
Of course that is salvageable but means we need to win a couple of games you’d not expect us to…. Like West Ham away!!!!

Ironic you predict us 9th by a point.
I’d sort of take that but undoubtedly I’d be irking back to lost points these first few fixtures

Not usually one for stats etc but this was even understandable for a thicko like me
Nice

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Thanks Andrew. I love a stat, especially when it’s put so elegantly into context as in this piece.

I remember early last season someone talking about how we were performing better than our underlying stats and how that was potentially worrying. So following that logic we should be pleased by our underlying stats exceeding our actual performance. Obviously as we discussed at the time this takes a while to unwind and may take all season.

I want to see us continuing to improve over time as that’s how you get to where you want to be if you do this season after season, so if we could be in the top ten that would be progress provided we haven’t massively overspent which is yet to be seen. I can still see at least eight teams that on paper should be better than us and I’d like to see a proper analysis of why that isn’t the case before I accept the premise that we should be top eight. If you look at the following teams: Swansea, West Ham, Middlesbrough, Wolves, WBA, Bristol City, Birmingham, Southampton, Millwall, Wrexham, Burnley. Which of those teams on paper (not current performance) should we be so much better than and why? I still think we can get ahead of them but it would be outperforming our level in my opinion.
