I've found myself spending more and more time in my car lately because of work.

Can anyone recommend any good, preferably free, podcasts to download. I've tried audiobooks but they send me to sleep which isn't the best thing when driving.

Cheers.

Radio 4, In Our Time - free off the BBC podcast website.

Hits the mark just about everytime.

This American Life. A bit uneven, but the best episodes are terrific.

RTE Documentaries, very interesting and well made
From Our Own Correspondent
History Network - weirdly soporific delivery, but can be engrossing
The Bugle - very funny

Fighting Talk from BBC Radio. Topical sports quiz / discussion which is consistently good.

Mixed bag of recommendations from me:-

Over The Monster - brilliant Red Sox podcast for stat-heads and lunatics
Open All Rs - wish it was daily
The Danny Baker Show - only on Saturdays now, but seldom is wonderful
Frank Skinner - ditto
Football Weekly - Guardian greatness
The Vinyl Cafe - twee-but-excellent Canadian show of stories and music.
RTE Documentaries - very well done
In Our Time - as mentioned above, a great programme
Great Lives - also excellent from the Beeb
Desert Island Discs - the discs are vut to 30 seconds but the interviews and interviewees are fascinating and Kirsty's Scottish burr is bewitching!

A couple not already mentioned, both Friday shows:

5 live's World Football Phone-in (Tim Vickery & Andy Brassell)
Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's Film Reviews

If you install NerdoftheHerd's Radio Downloader you can get anything off the BBC website:

all my favourites already mentioned
The Bugle.
Football Weekly.
Danny Baker.

also The Word magazine podcasts were great, but The Word magazine went bust so don't know if the podcasts are still available.

If you want something a bit different, try Hooting Yard. (bizarre but funny poetry)

Great bit of kit is that downloader! Thanks.

Already scouting for some good shows. Going off-topic here a bit but can anyone recommend good BBC shows for indie/alternative/Uncut-reader types like myself? Favourite music would be Midlake, Wilco, Iron and Wine, Marissa Nadler, alt-J, Danger Mouse etc.

Hadn't heard about The Word going bust. Was looking for a copy today...

Alot already mentioned but the ones that I am subscribed to are

5 Live film review (every Friday) - Mayo and Kermode
Inside the Huddle -NFL review
Open all R's - Always good
Football Weekly (Mon and Thurs) - James Richardson is a boss
Football Ramble (Tues/Wens) - More laid back version of Football Weekly with less serious analysis. Basically 4 mates discussing the last week with a love of all things Balotelli
Stuff you should know (roughly half hour of 2 guys discussing a subject in detail, most recent being 'how Black Holes work', I find it really interesting!)

Have a listen to the Richard Herring Edinburgh Fringe Podcasts and the interviews he does at the Leicester Square Theatre. All free on i-Tunes or from his own website.

Some fanstastic laugh out loud moments, even if you don't go for his comedy (which is an acquired taste) the people he interviews and the discussions that they end up in can be brilliant. All recorded live with no editing. Been following him for the last few years and he certainly made Beijing traffic commute more bearable.

Never knowingly understood

5 live football daily is good, loving the football manager podcasts but nothing beats Danny Baker and Open All R's

I listen to Fighting Talk, Football Weekly and the Mayo and Kermode one although they're way to cliquey these days.

And Open All R's of course, which it's a privilege to be a part of every now and again.
Rather embarrassingly though I was listening to it on the tube recently and didn't have my headphones plugged in properly so it was playing out (very) loud to the entire carriage. I think the theme music and the fact I was listening to an episode I was on myself probably killed all chance I have with the hot girl who sits opposite me every day. Still, Queens Park Rangers are on the up and up.

Guardian Football Weekly
Desert Island Discs
Sportsweek with Gary Richardson
R4 Today highlights
R4 Brief lives
606 Phone In
5Live Monday night club
TMS - review of the day
and many others. Just found one the other week by some American chap which is the history of WW2 - about 30 hour long episodes - it is absolutely brilliant and fascinating and free.

Do you ever listen to 6Music. Available on digital radio and the internet. Should be right up your street.

Football Weekly - James Richardson underused and still fondly remember the Italian footie on C4.
Kermode & Mayo movies
Bugle
+ Richard Herring is prolific and some of his with other comedians are worth a listen - some better than others.
Theres also a sky football podcast (had Phil Beard on it a while back) and is more serious and in depth than most - again depends on guests and topic as to whether worth an hour of your time.

Just checked their website. Looks really good, and I'll definitely give it a go. Thanks for that, Derby. Just moved back to England and needed a few pointers.

The only podcast about Argentine football that is completely in English.

The fantastically named Hand of Pod! I used to be one of the hosts. Can't do it anymore for work reasons (too busy!)

But if you want to discover Argentine football in your language...then that's the best way to start:
