Its takes years to develop to defend properly - Manning & Co 10:13 - Sep 8 with 1565 views | ParkRoyalR | Craig Levein on McTominay trying to fill in at Centre Half at Scotland...'it takes years to develop the second sense of being able to defend properly'...immediately thought of Manning....and also Roy Keane's dismissive comments of Ashley Young's being converted from a Winger to a Left Wing Back. Without a very defensively minded and mobile left sided Centre Half in the three, we need to give up on Manning as a Left Wing Back experiment. Manning is our best crosser of a ball and Dykes is showing signs he can lose his markers and this combination could be key this year as could leaking goals via Manning ball-watching. Time to change tact on this one.

If the money was right, I'd ideally sell him. Regardless of what position they're played in, we can't have players at the club who're so happy to give out to others when they're at fault for goals but not happy to mark up themselves. But there's no sign of any incoming bids.

That would require a coach to actually start coaching defending and we don’t have one of those
| And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot
That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles

I'm not sure we have time to do this and that ball-watching is an easy fix - having lost Eze's creativity think we need Manning further up the pitch Plan A for me should be Hamalainen / Barbet / Dickie / Masteron / Kakey Plan B could be Barbet at Left Wing Back and Kane at Right Wing Back if Warbs does n't fancy Hamalainen and cannot get in a defensive minded and mobile Left Wing Back

are we not supposed to be a club developing players so if we don't have the time to develop them what is the point. Maybe moving him forward is the answer but I'm not convinced by our other left backs. I've not seen enough of Hamalainen to know if he is any better as a defender or going forward

I'd rather develop our players to play in their natural positions as Manning apparently came to us as Winger / Left Sided Midfielder. I get trialling Manning at LWB whilst Hamalainen was gaining experience, but Hamalainen now has a full season of competitive football behind him and apparently earned good reviews. So now must be the time to abandon the Manning Wingback experiment as our Plan A and get him working cohesively with Chair and Dykes as our main attacking threats for the forthcoming games.

Manning has played left back, central midfield and left wing for us in the past and for me his best season by miles was at left back. if Hamalainen is good enough then great give him a chance and move Manning forward to see how it goes but as i say not seen enough of him to be that keen on the change.

I agree. Manning has been developed at QPR in many ways and is now a good players and a good asset. If we were to see him, though, I'm not sure we could rely on Wallace and the unproven Niko. So it's either keep him at left/wing back or cash in if we can and buy to replace.

Disagree on this one, Manning's stats last season going forward believe were very impressive and having secured Dykes, admittedly based on a couple of viewings, believe he would benefit on us retaining the best crosser of a ball at the club, Manning also has the ability to compensate for his lack of pace by crossing around his man and cutting inside and crossing when faced with a quick defender, I would prefer we offloaded BO'S as not sure we'll see that 6 game hot-streak again without Eze and believe Shodipo is a far more effective right sided winger who has a trick to beat his man on the outside and again is a very good crosser of the ball (based on the dozen or so cameo's I've seen over the last 3/4 seasons) Still believe if kept fit could be a very good championship player for us, as I believe Symth could be.

Very optimistic view of Shodipo. Replacing BOS with Shodipo, in part because you view him as a far more effective right sided winger is a bold statement. Would be great if he was, we'd make a few million and have a ready made replacement but I just can't see it. During his early games under Holloway I felt there was a good player there but unsucessful loans followed by more injuries seems to have hampered his progress a bit and since he's had a bit of game time under Warbs I've not been overly impressed. Not bad, but certainly not screaming out that he's our answer to any BOS departure. Similar story with Smyth, although I think he has more chance of making it than Shodipo does. I would love to be wrong on this one but I think we'd need to find a replacement for BOS outside of the club rather than within unfortunately.

Depends on the manager a little bit no? If you have a manager with a rigid system which requires everyone to know their role and execute to the letter, then shoehorning players into roles they aren't used to is going to be a problem. In a system which is more fluid and the system is used to maximize players individual attributes and abilities, having that ingrained "positional knowledge" is less important.
