“We”? King Warnock not immune from criticism but I think most supporters would’ve accepted going down fighting My view was he took us up so deserved a season plus there’s no better man to get you back up Digging up threads from years ago achieves little. My gripe is we had him second time around and backed the wrong horse..... the people running the club are masters at it

Isn't it? I was expecting people to tear him apart but they don't. The criticism seems quite mild actually and probably not as rabid as I originally thought. I think we are angrier now though, even from 8/9 years ago.

It's harsh in the light of day! I wasn't posting then I don't think, but I def backed Hughes.

I think I was open-minded about it. Until Hughes said, "They didn't interview me, I interviewed them". And then I thought, this is unlikely to end well. [Post edited 3 Nov 2020 22:51]

Traore had a purple patch of about three games before he turned into that Samuel L Jackson character in Unbreakable.

The dross we signed was down to Briatore, not Warnock. Warnock had lined up the likes of Routledge (temp-to-perm) and Ashley Williams and they would have signed. Briatore didn’t sanction signings as he wanted to sell the club while the stock was high. By time the club was sold those two had gone elsewhere and we were left with the dregs with the transfer window closing very shortly. Any player we sniffed around knew we were desperate so they (and no doubt their agent) could demand stupid salaries and we either had to accept or basically go the season with the Championship squad. We would have broken Derby’s low points record getting beaten badly week in week out. In hindsight it probably wouldn’t have been so bad but no one, not even us know-all fans, would have known then. It was the summer transfer window when that first PL season ended that we needed to get it right and we didn’t, that’s not down to Warnock.

He did make some piss poor signings when we went up, Flavio didn't help but he spent money poorly after promotion. I personally think we'd have gone down if Warnock had stayed but that would have probably been better for us long term

Yes, they were piss poor signings but that's all that was left in the barrel by the time Briatore sold. I don't recall too many people bemoaning Barton (other than his character) and SWP played really well against Newcastle that we, me included, thought he'd have a good season. He basically gave up shortly there after yet trousered something like £35k+ a week for the next 5 years. These were the players we signed while Briatore was still in charge; 13 July 2011 Jay Bothroyd Cardiff City Free 13 July 2011 Kieron Dyer West Ham United Free 25 July 2011 Danny Gabbidon West Ham United Free 4 August 2011 DJ Campbell Blackpool £1.25 million 10 August 2011 Brian Murphy Ipswich Town Free One fee of £1.25m and the rest freebies. Again, to keep the books looking good. These were who we signed after Briatore sold the club; 26 August 2011 Joey Barton Newcastle United Free 27 August 2011 Luke Young Aston Villa Undisclosed 30 August 2011 Armand Traoré £1.3 million 31 August 2011 Shaun Wright-Phillips Manchester City £4 million 31 August 2011 Anton Ferdinand Sunderland £3 million £8.3m but, as said, they were all that was left. I do agree we'd probably have been better off if Warnock had stayed and we'd gone down as we spent even more money the next few transfer windows and still went down the next season. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
