Ilias Chair - Finishing School 13:17 - Oct 11 with 3323 viewsCliveWilsonSaid

Young Ilias is having a fine season. Tireless display, after tireless display. Goals, assists, corners, tricks, freekicks, dribbles, passes….. He’s got it all. We’ve seen some great finishes this season but his is the best of the lot for me.

Yet still I want more.

It’s now seven games since he’s scored. It’s not that he hasn’t been getting into good positions and I can’t really say he’s been wasteful either. He’ll mostly be on target but they haven’t been getting past the keeper for some reason.

What the hell we’re winning anyway but if he could only make them count more often he’ll be one of the best players in the Championship. I sometimes feel he tries to place it in the top corner too much. He did it against Bristol City last week and somebody commented about it near me at the game and against Reading he had the shot in the second half that Lumley saved and Nick London apparently commented about - “hard and low”. So I’m not alone.

Also I think that being a right footed player on the left of midfield doesn’t help him when it comes to scoring. When he does break into the box it’s nearly always on the left channel and he has to shoot with his weaker foot. He did it against Sheffield Utd in the week. A storming run taking him into the box but on his left foot and the shot is on target but a bit tame. I can’t remember the last time I saw him break into the box on the right side and belt it with his best foot.

Come on Illy. GIVE US A GOAL!

I wouldn’t say he could be one of the best players in the championship he IS one of the best players in the championship. He would undoubtedly walk into any other team. And according to the BBC he is top of the assists charts and way ahead in the chances completed charts and very high up in the passes made and of those 86% completed which again is leading. And to throw in the 3 goals when his main purpose is to create isn’t too shabby either.

Chair’s been outstanding for us for years now, I think we’re all in danger of forgetting how good he is, we’re so used to him.

If he was six inches taller he’d be taking the piss in the Champions League.

I know about the stats and it's not a criticism. I think he won us that game on Friday - he was unbelievable.

I'm not sure there are limits with what he can do.

Giiiz a goal Illy!

Kudos to Beale and the coaching staff for helping him get to that next level.

agreed, he is the best player on the team and his height will always be unfairly held against him

chair unfortunately doesnt know how to self regulate, as shown by how he was closing down and pressing in the 75th minute up 3-0 against hull earlier this season

its a lot to ask him to both run our attack and also be super active in defense... beale needs to figure out how to manage his minutes and hopefully give him a lot of rest so hes fresh in the tail end of the season

Unfortunately for Ilias, but fortunately for us, I suspect he'll be a benchwarmer in Qatar.

Chair or Taarabt? They are very similar in style. Fantastic stuff and made from the right stuff, too.( Chair, that is).

Trouble is I don't think it does him any favours sitting on the bench. He came back a shadow of his former self after the disappointment of AFCON. Hopefully MB will spot that and build his confidence no matter what happens in Qatar.

For our sake, I'm hoping the difference is from a psychological pov that he's expecting to be a sub this time, whereas I think he went to AFCON expecting a lot of minutes.

He actually talks about exactly this on the latest Open all R’s podcast.

Chair is to Stan as Taarabt was to Rodney. Totally different players one was more an individual and the other a total team player. But both fantastic to watch. Chair has certainly become my favourite QPR player in the century. Really enjoy what he does and his relentless desire to help the team to win.

Having a fine season so far, only improvement needed would be his one on one finishing when bearing down on the keeper when breaks into the box.

Chair last season was a couple of levels below Willock but has closed the gap with the best performances of his career in recent games.

The finishing school thread title is one immediate area where he remains a level below Willock, in the accuracy of his shooting, although that is no slight as Willock's shooting accuracy is something else.

The most obvious test for Chair is whether he can perform to the same level when Willock is not playing alongside him as the 2nd 10.

Chair's form dropped significantly last year without Willock, although hopefully Reading is the benchmark in the next few games as put in an excellent performance without Willock.

Chair has improved significantly this year under Beale's coaching and does seem to be playing more with his head up and seeing the earlier pass in the way Willock does, hopefully this improvement is long-term as we all want to see him valued in the same bracket as Willcock and Eze.

Stylistically, I'd say Taarabt is more akin to Willock. Capable of the sublime, beats multiple defenders for fun and scores all sorts of worldies, but can also fade in and out of a game and isn't the most industrious. Chair on the other hand is a little whirlwind, constantly pressing, tracking back, always taking responsibility and trying to drive the team forward.

Ilias came across very well on the podcast again. In fact all of our players I’ve heard interviewed do, and easily surpass Mick’s ‘no dickheads’ rule. They are the most likeable group of players I can remember. I think this team has the potential to be very special.

That's outrageous, in fairness.

To quote Clive: "We won't know how good he is until he's gone."

"The opposite of love, after all, is not hate, but indifference."

I've been telling my wife for years size doesn't matter. Didn't stop Maradona or Messi from being two of the best footballers ever.

More seriously, Field's development into that holding midfielder who is also good in the air and can shield the back 3 (or 2) has been a bit of a revelation. Beale seems to be very adept at identifying specific strengths and working the game plan around them. I'd love to see Field shooting more as he has a great left foot but if he's freeing up Ilias or the ridiculously accurate Willock to have a dig, that's a problem I can live with.
