Feel from todays analysis NC is getting a good grasp of the teams shortcomings especially decision making in the final third.

Hopefully he can get Illy to make a higher percentage of his passes succesful and not under/over hit astray.

I felt Tim was extremely poor today and learning on the job for him is to Villa's benefit.

The options for the back four are often nonexistant especially first half. It gets so that Illy has to come back into our half to get the ball but he's needed further up.

Heck what do I know

captains fantastic

Liked the sound of the half time team talk - all this with the 'wrong' personality as well

I thought that we were a little bit unfortunate to be 2 goals down at h/t.....I thought generally we did not play too bad up to the final 3rd of the pitch....we lacked the quality basically. At h/t I did not think the game was lost and I also felt that Reading were not that good. We c ould well have, even, won gthe game.

Much improved performance all around the pitch (not difficult but...) - well done to the Team.

I thought he was way off with his assessment of the Luton game but have basically agreed with every word he's said since.

It's good to see us step up as we did in the second half, and I thought it was good to hear him mention just how hard you have to work to get a result in this division (and that the result was a draw not a win). Fair play to him!

The real test of his tenure is what he can do to change the pedestrian build-up leading to a blunt and toothless final third. Spotting what is wrong is the first step on the path to enlightenment, now I hope he can produce something different with these players.

I thought his Luton post match comments were mainly to avoid throwing the players under the bus at the first sign of a poor performance. I doubt he was as positive with the players in private.

Ferguson used to rarely publicly criticise Man Utd players. It’s good management as ultimately you need to keep the players on board to succeed as a manager. Ain’t going to happen if you throw them under the bus at the first opportunity.

BUT he didn't seem bothered by that after Fleetwood.

I know who I blame for the tone of that Luton interview but I'm leaving my hobby horse in his stable this afternoon

Picking his moments. Doesn’t work if you do it after every game we lose. Certainly wouldn’t with our lot given how often we lose!

I watched the Luton game back and it felt a lot worse at the game. They took their chances, but we were actually the better team (didn’t feel like that at the time) and missed the best 2 chances of the game. Both dykes and both from 3 yards

I think that's a very fair assessment.

At HT on the match thread I posted that I thought we had played ok. That might have been stretching it, and you've put it very well. Agree with all of that.

It’s a fair assessment, for what it’s worth I thought he was about right with Luton as well, this was backed up by the stats, we created a number of good chances, I was more concerned by Cardiff (A). I’m convinced the fanbase reaction to matches is completely focused on the result rather than looking deeper into the performance which I find frustrating.

Well, I had a mate come to the Luton game as a neutral, and he thought we were rubbish and out worked. He thought Iroegbunam was a problem in midfield (not tracking runners and very poor positionally), and Roberts was hiding, meaning we were effectively playing with 10.

I think it’s a bit obtuse to take the line of “the fanbase overreact”. We lost 3-0 at home to Luton (with a lower budget than us). We were poor. I don’t agree with Critchley that we deserved better.

Since then, Critchley has been spot on.

We were rubbish against Luton but was one of those games where we missed several good chances at 2-0 which would have changed the game so can see what he meant

Fine margins. Dykes was very unlucky with that backheel/flick that went just wide in the first half. Maybe a different game if that goes in.

This contrary idea we were actually ok against Luton needs killing off. Now.

Michael Beale — W1 D3 L2
Neil Critchley — W1 D3 L2

Bottom line is it's never acceptable to lose 3-0 at home.

Its you and me v the rest Clive.

Like you I'm baffled by calling the 3 Luton goals lucky, our meagre two chances unlucky and ignoring the complete lack of intensity, closing down, tackling, winning 2nd ball etc etc etc

Its all opinions in the end I guess?
