He got on at Ipswich, sat opposite me, clocked scarf and said “QPR I’ve played there a few times” Turns out he was westhams reserve goalkeeper in the 60’s, he played 3 first team games one of which was 6-1 loss to Manchester United, he was quite chuffed that Best, Charlton and Law had scored against him. He then spoke about the evening standard 5 asides, the keeper at the time Jim Standen I think he said didn’t fancy diving on concrete so he played, he was 17 so played behind Moore ,Scissons and a couple of others , after the 1st round the evening standard guy came round and gave them a tenner, this increased by £10 every round, he said he ended up with £150 and he was only on £7 a week so was well chuffed. He said he was Redknapps best mate, by now I thought he was starting to embellish it a bit but after a it of googling turns out he was!
His next move was Leicester, they gave him a £1000 signing on fee which bought him a house up there, said it was the biggest mistake of his life as Shilton was just emerging so he didn’t stand a chance. He ended up joining the police and playing for free for Kettering before transferring back to London and playing for the Met. Said he’s still in contact with Harry and meets regularly. As we got into Stratford he insisted on giving me his phone number and wants me to go for a meal and a pint with him after the Ipswich game as I was such good company on the train.
Nice story loftboy but you do realise then, when Sandra was chatted up by Harry and your new mate, when Harry first met Sandra, then his failure to bag Sandra over Harry, meant that the world would have not had to cope with the presence of Jamie Redknapp !!!
