Just back from an afternoon in the company of unkempt men (and occasional women) with matted hair and peculiar sartorial choices. No, not the Met Gala, but rather the 19th Bexley Beer Festival, where I took it upon myself to sample a third of a pint of a stout actually called ‘Hawkwind: In Search of Space’.
The Beermats Brewing Company, based in Winkburn, Nottinghamshire, make the bold claim that this concoction “harnesses the dark energy of a classic stout that echoes through every sip with a flavour profile that’s both grounding and expansive, like a bassline that hits your chest. The roast malts are dark and smooth, reminiscent of a starless void, with the caramel offering a nebula of flavour drawn from a swirling galaxy of taste. Perfect for cosmic space travellers”.
Well it got me pi$$ed at any rate.

4.8%. Found a 6.7% barley wine called ‘Old 1066’ from the Goachers Brewery, Maidstone too, which my Charlton mate and I foolishly tried. The Tottenham representative, predictably, but wisely as it happened, wimped out of that one.

Fuller's do a decent stout - Black Cab. Now only available in bottles. At one time you could get Black Cab, Honeydew, London Porter, Summer Ale and another whose name escapes me on handpump. Now all relegated to bottle only. Great shame.

My Great Gran, interviewed by the Middlesex Chronicle on the occasion of her 100th birthday in 1968, attributed her longevity to drinking a bottle of stout every day since the age of 40. She went on to live til the grand old age of 102.

When I was a kid, about half past five, my dad said “son, don't let it touch the sides”. Good advice. Edit, each Christmas he would sing that lovely song “it's beginning to look a lot like cirrhosis”

Believe it or not the Beermats Brewery also do a ‘glitter-infused’ IPA called ‘Silver Machine’. I can’t vouch for it personally but I do notice that it’s available on tap at the Birdcage Pub, Lincoln, which might add a certain frisson to next season’s trip to Sincil Bank.

In the late 70’s the cantankerous Welsh piss artist who ran the bar at my football club used to pour himself a double gin and top it up with the contents of the bitter slop tray. ‘Dog’s Nose’ he called it. Unfortunately no one thought to put a stop to that.
