who do you reckon will win. Have a listen to the embedded youtube vid and make up your own minds. Whatever you think about the stairway to heaven track their track sounds very much like the beatles song he plays.
It's not the same piece of music so although simularities, it's a complete crock of sh*te to say it was stolen. Do they own music notes? Of course not.

I think they're in huge trouble. The Stairway-Taurus similarity seems obvious to me anyway.
It's all in the A Minor chord. The fact a Judge has called it on, and the statute of limitations was negated by a 2014 re-master by Zep, has left them with some serious explaining to do.

Forgotten all about Spirit. Great band and Randy California a great guitarist. That's spotify sorted for me tonight.
Check out Twelve Dreams of Dr Sardonicus, a beautifully crafted album, a mix of rock, jazz, folk and psychedelia. One of my all time favourite albums. Randy was one of the few rock musicians I have met in person. A thoroughly decent gent. Such a sad loss when he died trying to save his son in a surfing accident. I often wonder about Zep, in how much of their stuff was 'borrowed' or heavily influenced by other groups. Used to like them. Can't listen to them at all now.
There aint half been some clever bastards.

Yeah that's the one album - got in on vinyl somewhere up in the loft. There's also another i've got called Adventures in Potatoland or something like that - which was a bit patch but had a couple of great tracks.

Ridiculous litigious culture in America! I'm sure if you look wide enough and far enough back in time, you'll find elements of almost every modern song have been done before. Next I suppose they'll be trying to sue bands for copying drum patterns.
100% of people who drink water will die.

Loved Spirit, never much liked Led Zeppelin. So guess which way I'll be voting.
Spirit was one of the staples on the tape machine for us old roadies in the seventies. Lovely jazzy piano break...
Never understood these lawsuits, most music of the time was borrowed from old blues chunes anyway. Stairway was written just up the road from Devil's Bridge....pronounced Merkuntlleth....
I read about this before a few years back and I think that the two bands toured just before Stairway was written, the implication/allegation being obvious.
I don't care if they nicked a bit or not, it's still a cracking choon and even the clip shows that Zep took a riff and made into something more glorious.

fair enough but then come out and give spirit their cut of the royalties or at least admit you sampled a bit of their song. Its not like they're short of a few quid.

Very true.
"The opposite of love, after all, is not hate, but indifference."
That for me conclusively proves that Stairway to Heaven is better. :)
Seriously though - the Zep version seems more melodic. Jimmy Page probably did nick it, or the guts of it. Maybe he knew where and how it had lodged in his brain or maybe not. Getting the LA lawyers involved is pretty unfortunate way for things to go - I'd like to know who's in this 'Estate' or whatever it's called - hopefully not a load of nephews and neices twice removed - if the man didn't get the money when he was alive maybe it's best to leave it.

As a very young kid he used to gig with Hendrix back in the Café Wha days.
Ed Cassidy, the very tasteful drummer in Spirit was his stepfather

Due to my almost insane obsession with Hendrix I have a picture of me stood outside the Cafe Wha in my green and white Hooped Rangers shirt. Took us ages to find the place but it was worth it, just to be there I suppose.

I'll hold my hand up to that as well.
Felt a bit daft but went and stood outside the Samarkand Hotel for a few minutes on 18th September 1990

How does anyone record a twelve-bar blues song without being sued by everyone else who recorded one previously?
That's true, it's a ridiculous argument. There must be hundreds of songs that have a similar sound.
Listen to this for example, I love the Jam but Start is a complete rip off the Beatles
LA Lawyers would raise a law suite against anyone if there was a sniff of a big payout. The Judus Priest case for example for suicidal lyrics when the record is played backwards at a certain speed and you listen closely. Ridiculous.
