Something about fans from that part of the world that’s so Neanderthal. Walking back to the station and a PV fan with his two kids by his side comes up and wants to have a go! We just stood there and laughed at him - muppet!
What some folks who weren’t there might not appreciate: they had one over the line that wasn’t chalked up and their keeper made a great save from a brilliant header from Dichio to snatch it right at the death. I suspect the PV fan would have really lost it if we’d won.
Oh, and we were utterly rubbish!!
'Always In Motion' by John Honney available on amazon.co.uk
It was shown on TVS or whatever it was called. I managed to get a ghosty picture of it and watched it all. Don't know how I managed to stay the distance but was really pleased that I did.

From what I’ve read the Neanderthals were lovely people. You wouldn’t want to mess with them but generally they’d be more like jazz-loving beatniks than Port Vale supporters. They’ve always had a bad press. Same with the Philistines.
You watch the game and you can't help but wonder why Danny Dichio wasn't in Pulp Fiction.
I always loved that cover of AKUTRS of the gangly Dichio about to burst into the Sampadoria pitch to replace the subbed Klinsmann. I think the headline was: ‘Strange But True!’

West Midlands even though Stoke area bit further on really, but yeah.
TVS and Carlton we could get in those days (LWT at the weekend in London area)
I watched the game on Meridian, which might have been Southern back then. Rang my brother at halftime to ask if he was watching this load of old pony and he wouldn't believe I was watching it, as he said at the time, London team should be on London telly.

Yes it still is, Meridan took over from TVS - like Carlton did Thames TV.
We had 2 TV areials, so had both London and Meridian, which was handy - didnt see the game though as I was at an event that day with friends from School.

I was at uni at Birmingham so was watching it with my housemates. Unsurprisingly it looked like game over at half time so they decided to head out while I decided to grin and bear the second half, when they came back they didn't believe me when I told them the final score.

That entire season was the death knell of what QPR had stood for.
Losing kevin Gallen so early in the season was disastrous for both player and club.
The Houston/Rioch combination was arze over teets from the start. Sadly Chris Wright had little idea how and what was going on.
We still had Brevett, Barker, Bardsley, Impey, Sinclair, Maca, Maddix plus Peacock & Spencer. Yes they were getting on but that's a lot of experienced heads to have in your team.
Dichio, Murray, Quashie where coming through and we still had steady Yates.
Sadly this squad also contained Ready, Morrow, Slade, as well as a player who we paid £1.5 million the season before. I cant spell the word knut.
This was also a team whose manager stated that Paulo Wanchope was not the sort of player QPR needed despite scoring a hat full of goals in 3 reserve games. In fact this quote still haunts me to this day.
That 4-4 was a real highlight and the first two games gave us real hope until Kev did his cruciate

Despite all that, we managed to string a few results together and I recall by the last game of the season it was still mathematically possible (albeit very slight) for us to grab a play off place.
But yes who knows what might have happened having a fit Gallen for the whole season.
My claim to fame.....when Vales 4th went in those are my gloves that land just to the right of Roberts goal. I was screaming abuse at the useless Knut in goal. A steward told me 'you're lucky you're 4 nil down as I'd have you nicked and slung out'....when we equalised I jumped off the wall into the back of the netting, got my feet caught in the netting and had to fight the very same steward to get back in the seating area. It was like a tug of war with about 5 of us struggling with a bunch of stewards. So come on, how many of departed at half time and went to the pub opposite ?????

I definitely watched the game on TV, I was youngish and naïve and just thankful to see us on TV. I'm very sure my dad never got to see the whole game though as I recall he stormed off pretty angry about it and did something else instead
Amazing to see the game again, although I remember on the day itself feeling like us pulling it back was weirdly inevitable as soon as Impey got the 2nd. It just felt like such a classically Rangers way of going about things.
We've got a very Warburton look to us there - some gorgeous football here and there, with all the gritty midfield presence of a creme egg.
I really liked Murray but fk me, Peacock could be a liability. Put a tackle in, Vicar.
I was always stumped as to how Houston and Rioch managed to not get us promoted with that team, but watching it back now, you can see exactly why.

Houston was not managerial material and bringing his ex boss in as his number 2 was clearly a disaster, even Chris Wright said he was surprised and queried it at the time, and also said the first thing Houston managed to do was call him (rioch) Boss or Gaffer in front of players at the first training session.
What a cock up

You can see a very young(ish) looking Ted when the 4th goes in.
That was one of my more restrained goal celebrations then we had to rescue my lad Dave from the clutches of the stewards and police.
Talking about Paul Murray I thought he was a very skillful and classy player, when we were up at Grimsby we were playing shite and losing and Rioch came onto the touchline and was waving his stupid arms about giving helicopter blade rotation instructions to Paul Murray, Murray looked at him and put his arms out as if to say WTF are you on about? that summed up Rioch for me, there was a fans rumour doing the rounds at the time that Spencer had had a row with Rioch and Rioch had grabbed Spencer by the throat hence Spencer's dip in form at the time.
My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.
