Why not celebrate it?

We've had threads on here celebrating Irish XI's.

I love that we have ideas like this.

Here's my draft 'Black (tragi)comedy XI'

Ikeme

Chimbonda
Samba
Gabbidon
Traore

Gobern
Diakite
Wright-Phillips

Slade
Maiga
Bent

Subs: Clarke, Dyer, Gnohere et al.

Porous, pointless and profligate would just about cover it.

Georges Santos will be disappointed to be left out of that team. Not particularly good, not all bad but definitely entertaining.

That goal was pure poetry in motion.

Devon was just too cultishly good in the end to make the cut for my carcrash Black XI, or so bad he was good. Or something.

Where is he now, I wonder?

I like that team. I'd only tweak it a bit, by selecting this defence instead:

Sweeper: Parker
RB: Walker
LB: Wilson
CB1: Maddix
CB2: Carlisle

Bruno's goal is up there, just wonderful, and the way Wilkins is strolling about controlling the tempo.

I get celebrating the great, and not so great, black players we've been privileged to watch, and also get Myke's point that by doing this, are we not reinforcing the difference (be it just skin pigment) between people of different hues?

Anyway, what a f**king goal.

Gotta have Brumo on the bench, if only for the crowd chants.

I can't think of any other player held in such affection for so little time spent on the pitch.

I might be wrong but wasn't our first coloured player Tessie Balogan, not sure if I have spelt his name right, maybe 30s 40s or early 50s ?

I liked Langley but Quashie was the better youth player and probably had a better career(?)

Early in his career we played West Brom at home and he gave one of my favourite ever misfield displays. Awesome.

That's a good question and I wouldn't make too much of an issue over recent players, but I think it is fair enough when we're looking at the distinctive history of our club. We were relative pioneers of black players back when there were massive barriers* to them, including players in positions that weren't thought "natural" for black guys e.g. Bob Hazell at CB or Derek Richardson in goal (OK, not great, but how long was it after that before another black goalkeeper played in the top flight?)

Similarly there's a link with Ireland due to the whole Kilburn/West London Irish thing and I think it's fine to celebrate that, or you could do it with youth team products. I suppose Scottish players is sort of the reverse, it's bloody hard to think of an XI!

*including at this club - Les Ferdinand commented that he had to go to Hayes to get football while we were signing lads from Ireland, and we missed out on John Barnes

The fact that we can list several teams worth of of great black players and characters is worth celebrating. I’d say there are lots of teams that couldn’t do the same.

If you don't have a front three of Steve Slade, Lee Charles & Dominic Iorfa you haven't been trying.

The grass is always greener.
