Academy players.: care package by Palace 18:54 - Feb 2 with 2533 viewsTonto

Crystal Palace have become the first club to offer an aftercare programme for released players 😍

The three-year aftercare package will support released academy players in making a way of life, outside of football.

WE NEED MORE OF THIS! 🙌

BUT: well done Palace. Quality idea. All clubs should do this.

Why stop now, just when I'm hating it

All clubs should do this, and if we want to attract players and get chosen ahead of the likes of chelsea, Arsenal etc we probably need to.

Most clubs should also introduce a package that helps them cope with being signed up and deal with the pressures of becoming rich very quickly.
Can't help thinking that these kids that come from difficult backgrounds should be coached in the methods of how to deal with fame and the challenges that go with it.

Worldwide issue. 80% of NFL players are broke two years after their career ends, not far behind is the NBA. Chew 'em up, spit them out. The travesty is most come through a supposed college education!

Well done Palace.

Not a club that I've ever warmed to, but a club that has certainly risen in my respect for them over the last few years.

Maybe not as high as 80%, but there's a huge percentage of pro footballers in this country that are filing for bankruptcy within 5 years of retiring too I think isn't there?

It features frequently on Undr The Cosh of players talking about struggling to adapt to normal life after they've finished playing and left the football bubble. It must be really difficult, especially if you've never been given any real education outside of football after the age of 16.

I thought the NFL had quite an extensive program to present to rookies during the early part of their first season that discusses handling finances, media and life in general, including what they can do in the future. They also have a strong network created through connections of their college and that also includes the fact that many have degrees and were close to finishing their degrees.

So, if 80% are broke, to me that sits on the players not the NFL or the teams.

Football players here do not have these same luxuries. They almost all do not have any full education, at most a final year at school. So, for them very few will get jobs that fit above that qualification and fewer probably will go back to school to finish and then go on to university. At least Palace are trying something that could help.

It's not just financial difficulties which they struggle to deal with, it's personal issues as well. Very many footballers marry in their mid-20's, retire in their early 30's, then divorce in their mid-30's, since the transition from being a footballer to hanging around the house all day with nothing to do, while far less money coming in and a huge mortgage to maintain etc, puts a huge strain on their marriage.

While the consequent divorce heaps huge extra strain on their finances - see eg Ray Parlour, who effectively was unable to take on extra work post-retirement, since it would all go to his ex-missus anyway:
