Amos, Richards and Clarke-Salter 08:01 - Aug 14 with 2738 views | dmm | If I understand Beale correctly, Amos, Richards and Clarke-Salter are out until after the international break. I make that 8 games. That's a long time with only Dozzell, Johansen and Field available in central midfield (plus Thomas when he's back but, you know...). This is a big concern but I guess we knew our thin squad would struggle to provide cover to the starting 11 unless everyone was fit.

Spot on. I was quite impressed with Dozzell when he came on yesterday, he had far more energy than Johansen and his passing was much better too - the ball he played in for Armstrong was quality.

Agree with this… although not our ideal, Amos being absent is less of a concern when Willock is playing and Johansen is a useful old head when our creative players are firing on all cylinders.

Doesn’t seem Beale’s cup of tea so far. Noticeably doesn’t mention him in that group of exciting players when he talks about how he wants to have all of them to choose from, maybe reading too much into it but seems Dozzell has got some work to do to get in the starting 11
Amos, Richards and Clarke-Salter on 09:05 - Aug 14 with 2380 views | StreathamRanger | I'd sooner give Dozzell the time to develop than watch Johansen plod around game after game. Dozzell has plenty of potential, I can't see Johansen getting any better which is a shame as when he first arrived he was brilliant and really drove the team forward. Been a long time since we've seen that player.

I do wonder whether Beale has given Dozzell a bit of a rocket. He certainly seemed much more energetic when he came on yesterday than in previous matches. His big problem for me is going missing. We can't afford to carry anyone which is why we had to get rid of Gray: scored some important goals but didn't do much else.

Hopefully Beale can improve him as a player as he's still young and clearly has potential. Looked to me like he'd bulked up a little. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Dozzel does have some work to do. But as we've seen with Willock, Eze and Chair for example he has to play games to develop. Which doesn't always win us football matches but as a development and selling club we have to do. Don't we..?.

I dont think Dozzell can be trusted at the moment, its ok coming on and looking sharp in a cameo against a tiring team however when Dozzell starts games he is generally pretty woefull He has technical ability and should be better than he shows but i dont think you can start with him until he sorts himself out in terms of application and concentration. not if you want to win games.

Yeah, JoJo offered zero protection against Sunderland, Field had to do it all on his own. If this is his current level, then we should have kept Ball. As a wild idea, could possibly Dozzell play LB if Paal is not available, I mean would it be worse than Niko? Losing those 3 is a blow, but the results have been okay so far, which surprised me. We got lucky at Sunderland of course and I think Beale knows this. Hopefully, we shall have Willo and Paal back for Blackpool as they were robbed against Swansea at the weekend and pool looked a decent side. A hard game that and we won't get that lucky again all season.

Johansen is going from bad to worse. Nothing he seems to do makes his performances any better. We seem to have seen his best in that 6 month loan period

Disagree, I feel Johansen looks a lot fitter this season and he offers a bit of quality and experience in the middle of the park. He does the hard things simply. There is a player in Dozell trouble is his head goes if he makes a mistake, cut the basic mistakes out and confidence will be high. Personally on the injury front more concerned with Richards carrying an injured loanee for a few weeks, hopefully his parent club is covering the cost.
Amos, Richards and Clarke-Salter on 00:00 - Aug 15 with 1323 views | stanistheman | 8 games with such a small squad of decent players is a lot and we need some more signings. P&S rules allow for a £39m loss over 3 seasons. I am not sure how much the club has so far lost, but think there is room for some more signings, as we can always try and make a deal with interested clubs to sell Willock or others in January (preferably with a loan back until the end of the season as other clubs have done). To do nothing else in this window and hope that we get no more injuries or that the stand in players like Hamalainen, Thomas, Shodipo etc can sufficiently cope is foolish.

Everyone from fans to Andy Sinton bangs on about the value of experience, but very often it seems to be our experienced heads, past and present (from Jojo to Austin), that take away as much as they bring, owing to their lack/loss of pace or seemingly indissoluble capacity for acts of footballing stupidity. Stef's suicidal tackle at the SoL was a double case in point - he gets caught the wrong side of his man (slow/flat-footed), prods the ball to their man (gormless), and it's 2-0. I think the supposed risks of blooding youth in its supposed susceptibility to blowing hot and cold and need for 'protection' (cf. Armstrong) are over-stated by contrast, i.e. the 'downside' of giving Armstrong a run of games would be, in my opinion, far smaller than hoping we'll get a tune out of our skipper one of these days. If he's good enough, he's old enough, and he's both. If Beale can't see Armstrong is a better bet than Dykes and Bonne combined, that's a worry. SJ, by contrast, is (whisper it!) replaceable, at the end of his shelf-life, and an uninspiring captain - slower than Super Ray while five years younger, and none of the quality. He's had a bad week or so, that's for sure.
