Beale Match Winning Formation Change + Substitutions 10:54 - Oct 8 with 3049 viewsParkRoyalR

Bumped into Mick Beale after game last night and complimented him on going to a 3 and giving us the outlet with the Wing-backs to get back into the game,

Fair play to him for being so brave and can rarely recall one of our Managers being so astute and confident to makes those changes all of which worked,

Agreed with all those substitutions except Field instead of Tim as thought Tim was flagging, but like Chair seems to be a player who has the desire to play through that barrier and keep running, and what a run to win that penalty, something Beale obviously knows he has in his locker and can hurt teams late on more than say Field,

Great to see a young Manager not play safe or just make the obvious substitutions, full credit to him for a big 3 points in front of a near full-house, and a great defensive performance again, even with Dieng not being able to kick and credit to Dunne again for taking the lead at the back and always being willing to take the ball off Dieng.

Shows that three at the back is not as defensive as some might think, especially when you have three who can play a bit and the oppo have moved to one up top.

What it enables is moving the oppo around deeper and gaps will open up in their initial defensive bank of four by ACB driving into the inevitable space that will appear.

Exactly the right move last night and this ability to adapt in game is certainly something that puts Beale ahead of Warbs so far.

All in all a great week...

Can we go out yet?

His changes won us the game last night, I liked Warburton did a very good job for us but this fella is a step up for in game management

Yes agree, how many of us would have taken off Sam Field against a very athletic team like Reading when they'd been on the front foot? That's a brave call.

And Mick Beale took the compliment very well and just said we needed to impose ourselves back on the game, like so many of our current set-up from Les down, just respectful of the fans and always up for a quick chat.

Great use of his subs last night, freshened everything up and changed our formation for the good - good & brave decisions indeed. And I thought the replacements did very well when they came on.

As for Field, done his job well again last night, I was shocked when he was replaced but Beale's mentality may have been a winning one that is what he saw and we did just that. I also thought Tim was flagging a bit but the part he played in the winning goal was excellent.

Good management team decisions assist in winning tight games against decent looking opposition and that is what Reading looked like last night.

Tim was growing into the game in the second half with some lovely passes and Beale’s subs gave him greater freedom to get forward which ultimately won the penalty.

Beale’s got pretty much everything spot on this week across three games starting with the centre back pairing vs Bristol and ending with the match winning subs last night. Very impressive.

Yes, Tim showed even when losing possession for their goal that he was prepared to take a risk in midfield to beat a player, whereas we know that's not Field's game, hence Beale making that call that won us the game,

Field as you say had done his job, the back 3 had given us back the possession Beale wanted and then he was prepared to kick on and try to win the game which is why he thought Tim was the better option for last 20.

Well done Mick Beale as won a tight game last night by reacting to Ince's HT teamtalk, making changes to counter and go on and win the game.

Just judging that last 20 minutes then Tim would have been MotM for me. Whether that was a role change, him just stepping up or something else I don't know but he looked on a different level to everyone else at that point. Maybe MB just gave him a bit more of a job to do.

The way he was passing the ball around, making space and being available to receive was really impressive. He's going to be some player.

Completely agree with this thread & how the formation changes & substitutions won the game.

I thought Luke Amos was superb with his closing down, passing, movement & especially his carrying the ball forward.

At times we showed how to close a game down. Ball retention eats up more time & in far more sucessful than taking the ball to the corner flag & losing pocession.

He took off Fields because he was dead after playing 3 games in the QPR engine room.
Plus he was booked and when I saw him tackling that Reading player from behind ( clean luckily) I was a bit worried he might get a second yellow
Great game managment again from Mick this man is amazing.
Before the game he said point blank " I want 3 points tonight and wont settle or be happy with a draw " .Fair play to him

Beale is brilliant. He’s intelligent and a passionate and enthusiastic student of the game. Great appointment by the board we are lucky to have him

Weeks like we’ve just had are great and to be treasured. Everyone was buzzing when I arrived at the pub. Loved the game and then post match pints

BUT… 5 subs are a big reason it is possible to be flexible this season so should be remembered for fairness when comparing with Warbs

Before last night, Tim had nearly cost us a goal in every game he’s played by getting brushed off the ball in a dangerous deep position. What happened last night has been coming.
Love players being brave on the ball, but they have to understand the risks and their limitations - he’s playing mens football now, not boys football and didn’t learn from the other games. But I guess that’s why the Prem clubs loan these players out, so they can make the mistakes and hopefully learn in somebody else’s team. Love the look of him at times, and to be fair he got back and was very unlucky with the pen - it wasn’t a reckless challenge in the box, he threw himself across the ball to block the expectant shot and the other fella stood on his trailing foot, but we can’t have him losing the ball in dangerous positions in every game. If we hadn’t won last night the knives would have been out for him, given he’s not our player to develop

Good point re five subs. It really helps in a busy three game week and Beale used the squad expertly over the three games with both his team selection and in game management.

Golborne, I’m sure the knives would’ve been out for Tim if we hadn’t won from some on here but even without the late penalty I thought he was excellent overall. Yes he lost the ball in dangerous positions a couple of times but it’s important to remember that he’s barely played 10 competitive games and he already looks a top player at times.

I’m sure Beale will works on how he can improve by perhaps taking fewer risks but I thought the good far outweighed the bad last night even with the first half penalty that was debatable and notwithstanding his excellent run that won the winning pen. I don’t think we have another player in the squad who can travel with the ball from deep like he does.

Agree with all that Clareman except Field wasn't booked. Iroegbunam and Amos were the QPR players shown yellows last night.

Field's getting better at avoiding being carded and has 3 yellows in 14 appearances so almost 1 every 5 games, although he does have the most in the squad so far this season.

Thankfully the caution at Charlton won't count towards the accumulation in The Championship. We are getting closer to reaching the number of games played where 5 cautions brings a suspension.
