Anyone live in the Burnt Oak area back in the 70's? Walking down Deansbrook Rd heading towards Mill Hill and a couple of mins before you came to that (fcking great) chip shop, the locals used to build a pyre worthy of burning Joan of Arc. It was big, very big, they spent weeks piling up wood and left a hollow so a couple of kids could sleep inside to stop other guttersnipes from torching it before Nov 5th. There were a family of Rangers lived right opposite, the Morse brothers, Ian and err, started with an M, forgotten

My brother and me always used to do this every year on the south side of Battersea bridge.We always seemed to collect a fair amount of coins from the people finishing work and walking back home,or getting off the buses.
It must’ve been a 60’s thing though because I’ve spent my entire adult life dressed like one of our old guys and nobody has ever given me any coins in early November.

I used to go out with a girl who lived off Deansbrook Road back in the early 80’s, I was a bit off a toy boy (met her through work) which means she’d be in her late 60’s now 😱

Was talking about this the other day . Used to earn a tidy profit outside the shops around the vale and from the cav / Lucas workers early eighties .
Can’t imagine many under a certain age would have a clue if they saw someone doing penny for the guy these days

Halloween is the big thing now though,which is something us baby boomers never celebrated.Who needed sweets when you could get bangers that actually made a noise?I think we certainly tested the strength of an action man with a banger stuffed in his trousers.Especially good with the skydiver one from the 11th floor of the block next door.
